Football is the game of the people.

It can be played in the streets of Buenos Aires, Lagos, Leeds or Lisbon with nothing more than a stone for a ball and jumpers for goalposts. It is the ultimate team game because it belongs to everyone.

Tonight’s World Cup final should have been a celebration of the beautiful game. Instead, it feels increasingly wrapped in razzmatazz: Robbie Williams and Tom Cruise, 30-minute half-time entertainment, hydration breaks, political interventions and ever more entertainment.

Football doesn’t need to become American football (and I love America Football). FIFA’s job is to protect the game, not reinvent it.

The beautiful game deserves better. @FIFA is no longer fit to be its steward and I hope @UEFA and the @FA will initiate a change.
