Trabzonspor players transfer model is intelligent, deliberate and prudent. They meticulously buy low, sell high, loan out, loan in, hunt for free agents and engage in massive volume of annual transactions to manage risk.
Looking at their transfers in and out flows I’m astonished how they are able to compete with the debt heavy and big spending clubs in Istanbul. To win the league four seasons ago and finish 3rd last season with 9 points ahead of Besiktas is astonishing.
The exact opposite will be a club like Fenerbahce. It’s a living Ponzi Scheme with €480m in debt and €170m annual wage bill. If they don’t qualify to the CL they’ll need to borrow more while holding everyone hostage for being “too big and loved to fail”.
Trabzonspor had a €115m debt as of May 2026 (The club president later announced in August it is down to €18m only) and €42m wage bill. Since 24/25 Trabzonspor only have €18m net spend while managing to finish 3rd last season in Turkish League.
In the same period Galatasaray with €500m debt and spent €248m (179m net) on new players. It seems they buy high and sell low.
Then “always the victims” Beşiktaş are the messiest with €510m debt and spent €195m (€112m net) on new players since 24/25. Their debt ballooned with 38% but “let’s sign Vlahovic”.
In all their transfers history Trabzonspor signed 1 player for more than €10m (Aral €13m) and since 24/25 signed 26 players with an average of €7m (all below €10m) then added 11 free transfer players (including Salah).
The loud and empty TV personalities and social media armchair experts will criticize the signing of players like Fabinho (free transfer), but combining short term quality fixes with younger inexperienced players is the only way to compete with Istanbul old rusty highly indebted big 3 clubs. It’s about finding the balance.
Signing a high salary free agent players like Salah force Trabzonspor into the conversation in Turkey and globally. Having him help them sign other players and give a boost to the club’s fanbase, brand and commercial side (jersey sales, etc.)
Trabzonspor are not perfect with growing wage bill (this is what signing free transfers do to you), aging squad (around 28yo, which means the new striker needs to be a younger player) and lack of cohesion on the pitch (players and manager not yet on the same wavelength).
That said,Trabzonspor seems to be the club in Turkish League’s Big 4 that knows what’s it is doing the most. They know who they are, what they can do, what not to do and how to leverage to the max every opportunity. You have to be all that to compete with the Istanbul big clubs.
Trabzonspor’un 2021-22 şampiyonluğunun hikayesini anlatan “Mavi Liman” nihayet yayında. Bugün çıkması bana da sürpriz oldu :) Kitap sizlere emanet…

Trabzonsporlu Stefan Savic:
“Bugün sahada Trabzonspor kaybetmedi. Bugün Türk futbolu kaybetti. Sahada futbol oynanmadı. Maç oynanmadığı için mağlubiyetten bahsedemeyiz."
