I finally finished "Apple in China" by @PatrickMcGee_, and I was not disappointed.

Those who want to better understand the geopolitical tensions between the US and China, and how one company finds itself in the middle of that, would benefit from reading it. I knew that Apple was dependent on China - but I had no idea just how much it was responsible for the country's growth:

- It invested $275 billion between 2016 and 2021 to build the country’s advanced electronics supply chain ($55 billion a year). More than the $52 billion *total* from President Biden's U.S. CHIPS Act.

- That went into training local talent who planned to replace Apple products with home-grown tech and accelerate China's “Made in China 2025” ambitions.

- Apple's "Turn to India" and dive into subscription-based digital programming will help wean off China for now, but the threat remains existential.

In many ways, this story is a fitting final part in what I have come to coin as 'The Chip Trilogy': starting with @crmiller1's "Chip War" (a direct influence on McGee's book), followed by @DAlperovitch and @vermontgmg's "World on the Brink".

I would strongly recommend all three as essential reading and look forward to following McGee's additional reporting in @TheFP.
