🇺🇸 Tyler Oliveira went digging into a federal program meant to help poor kids get internet access and found a story that gets uglier the deeper you go.

A consultant named Richard Bernstein pleaded guilty to taking more than $100,000 in kickbacks from the E-Rate program.

Ten weeks later, consultants sharing his last name had filed more than 140 new applications asking for another $3.3 million across 13 states.

And this apparently wasn’t the first rodeo.

In an earlier case, seven people tied to the same program pleaded guilty in a $14 million fraud scheme involving fake bids, inflated prices and equipment that allegedly didn’t even exist.

The wildest part? One of the people from that earlier case was still filing applications years after the FBI raids.

Find the printer’s local IP address, such as 192.168.x.x, and enter that address into your computer’s browser. Then look under Supplies → Supply Settings for Authorized HP Cartridge Policy and Cartridge Protection, and disable them if your model exposes them. HP specifically documents this route.

𝐀𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝, 𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐜𝐤 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫’𝐬 𝐟𝐢𝐫𝐦𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐞/𝐮𝐩𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐬𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬. If there’s an option for automatic firmware updates, turn automatic updating off so another update doesn’t unexpectedly alter cartridge compatibility. This doesn’t guarantee third-party cartridges will continue working because Dynamic Security can be built into firmware, but it removes one obvious pathway for future changes.

This American has been using her HP Printer at home for 5 years. It’s always worked fine but it kept asking her to connect to WiFi. She’s never connected it, but after nonstop notifications being told she needed to connect it to WiFi or she will lose the ability to print, she finally connected it

Now her printer wont print

She’s been using cheaper ink in the printer for years, it’s about $40 cheaper per cartridge and works the same

As soon as she connected to WiFi the printer updated to restrict the use of her printer with non-official HP INK cartridges

She’s so upset she’s in tears and losing it

I looked into this and they’re doing it to everyone

The message is “The indicated cartridges have been identified as altered or cloned. HP printers require original HP…”

That’s the exact error HP uses when Dynamic Security rejects a cartridge chip.

Connecting to Wi-Fi is how the printer gets the firmware that tightens those checks.
HP’s own docs say firmware updates over the internet “will maintain the effectiveness of the dynamic security measures” and can block cartridges that worked before

I lived in Canada for nearly a decade. Up there they have a practice called “hallway medicine” where they park beds and treat people in hallways because there are no rooms available.

One of my best friends was rushed to the ER with the worst headache of her life — and she had a history of brain cancer. They made her wait (which can take hours in a Canadian ER). Eventually she slumped over and died of an aneurism at the age of 25.

I was once waiting with my wife to be seen for a staph infection on her face. About six hours in of waiting in the ER waiting room (and being harassed several times by a drunk homeless woman for cigarettes) a large man comes in bleeding from his abdomen. They made him sit and wait to be triaged with a growing puddle of blood on the floor in front of him. After about a half an hour he begged to be seen and showed them that he was bleeding and they got annoyed with him and told him to go sit back down and wait.

We waited about 10 hours and then decided to go home.

My mother-in-law waited for nearly an entire year to have her neurostimulator that is literally wired into her spine replaced. She was bumped three times — one time she was literally ON THE OPERATING TABLE when she got rescheduled.

Yet you won’t hear complaints from Canadians about their healthcare system because it’s an unspoken taboo — but when every 1 in 20 Canadians is being killed by their government intentionally, it’s becoming hard to ignore.

Thales Storytime. My father owned a McDonalds franchise back in the 90s, and build a playplace in it. It was fun, all the kids loved it, business went up.

Then a black kid had to take a dump. And his mother told him to just do it in the ball pit because I dunno, dumbass ghetto trash. All the balls had to be thrown away, the playplace had to be closed, professionally disinfected at enormous expense per regulation, and basically all the revenue increase for that year was eaten up by one dumbass and the playplace had to be blocked off, which irritated customers who saw it and then couldn't bring their kids inside. Many complained. about false advertising, etc.

A cool thing became a drag and a negative.

I get why these went away. It sucks, it really fucking sucks, but we can't have nice things when welfare queens tell their kids to take a shit in the playground.
