There is absolutely no reason to lie to your doctor.

A 24-year-old lady came to the hospital complaining of prolonged vaginal bleeding. We examined her and had several possible diagnoses in mind.

Because she was 24, we asked if she was comfortable having her mother around. She said yes.

The doctor asked her, “Have you been sexually active?”

She said No.

When her mother stepped out, we asked her again privately.

She still said No.

We recommended an ultrasound scan, but she refused. Her mother also refused, insisting that it was simply her period and that we should give her medication to stop the bleeding.

Eventually, they left the hospital against medical advice.

Fast-forward to the early hours of this morning.

She was rushed back to the emergency, but this time, it was no longer just blood coming out. There was pus. She had developed a severe infection and acute kidney injury.

The ultrasound we eventually had no choice but to do showed retained products of pregnancy in her uterus following an attempted abortion.

If she had told us the truth from the beginning, the retained products could likely have been removed much earlier, and she might have gone home without this devastating complication.

By the time she returned, part of her uterus was already necrotic. With the severe infection and renal failure, removing the uterus became necessary to save her life.

A 24-year-old woman, unmarried and without a child, lost her uterus.

All because she was afraid of the shame and judgment that might come from her church and of course her mother was not helping matters at all.

This is why I keep saying that..

Your doctor is not there to judge you. Your doctor needs the truth to treat you properly.

You don't have to tell them what you think they want to hear. Tell them what actually happened.

Whether it is sex, abortion, drug use, traditional medicine, or anything else...please tell your doctor the truth.

You may be trying to hide a secret today, but that secret could cost you your life or permanently change it tomorrow.
