Perfect analogy for what happens when we do too much for our students. Goal is to develop independent problem solvers who can generalize and apply what they know to what they don't know!
🧵 One thing always surprises me when we talk about standards-based grading and retakes/redos.
People talk about it like you have to do them, and if you don't, you are doing it wrong.
Here's the deal, I don't give retakes.

@Mr_Rablin Instead of asking the class, “Does anyone have questions?” (Rarely a response) I started asking “What’s a question that one of your classmates might have right now?” And I wait. And there are ALWAYS Qs now. It liberates those with Qs & empowers them to use theirs to help others.
Hello! My name is Elizabeth Barwick, and I teach 8th grade Math & Algebra 1. This is my 15th year teaching. I love teaching in the Virtual Program because I enjoy getting to know my students and venturing with them into these new virtual spaces!
📢 We have some HUGE news: Polypad is now available inside Desmos Activity Builder! What interactive lessons can you create with our virtual manipulatives?

Yes! Feeling supported and heard by admin makes such a difference as a teacher. Thank you for listening and creating such an incredible space for teachers and students. Amazing first day back for @gcsdk12vp @EllisKS84
Back in the spring we met with admin and gave them ideas we wanted to see implemented. EVERY idea was included today. It is so refreshing to work on a team where you know you are valued and heard. Can’t wait for the best year ever! @gcsdk12vp @EllisKS84
Many math routines center around inviting and listening to student ideas. My goal as a teacher isn't to have students think like me. My goal is to bring out their inner mathematician, and when we do that, we help each person see that they are a math person.
👥 Creating a class brand with your students can help build relationships and a strong sense of community. Read about how my fifth grade class became known as Pixel Paws.
