My daughter's Y3 teacher is the absolute GOAT. She single-handedly crocheted a mini-me of each kid in her class as an end of year gift. Approx. 8hrs per doll. Even the hairstyles and clothes are spot on. What a legend.

Message as received:

A 73-yr-old cancer survivor parked her small old Nissan in Norwood last Saturday morning.

As she got out of her car, two men pounced on her with a gun and the other with hands around her neck forcing her onto the floor in the back of the car.

The thug at the back was kicking her, standing on her and hitting her with the butt of the gun all the while rummaging through her handbag. (She was tied-up with her own clothes.)

With the info and her bank pin, they went to the ATM to draw out as much as they could from her bank account.

They drove her around for 4 hours eventually dumping her still tied up without her clothing in Lombardy outside a park area where kids and their coach were playing football.

They had witnessed the incident and the coach very kindly collected money to call for a lady Uber driver to get her to the safety of her sisters home.

While this incident happened in Norwood, one of the homeowners observed this on her CCTV at her gate and pressed her panic button to alert her private security company.

They acted immediately trying to locate her.

They eventually found her vehicle in Alex and they organised with @SAPoliceService to get it to the police pound.

It was intact with all 4 wheels!

The lady went with family members to identify the vehicle and get it cleared from the pound only to discover the vehicle on bricks with all 4 wheels removed. (The bolts were lying on the ground next to the vehicle).

The staff at the pound were extremely rude and uncooperative.

The family eventually got a tow truck to remove the vehicle to a safe place before more damage could be done there.

It is clear that it's a very lucrative place to sell spares off vehicles that have been recovered and there is absolutely no recourse.

This morning I had the opportunity to share input at the budget vote debate for the South African Police Service budget.

I dedicated my speech to aunty Lulama 'Guffy' (pictured below), a friend and the late Gugulethu CPF Deputy Chairperson, who was tragically assassinated for her brave efforts to expose corruption in our beloved country.

Her legacy, like that of countless others, inspires our continued fight for justice and integrity. Of course so to the South African Police Service officer that was shot and killed in the Eastern Cape just a few days ago.

The challenges within the @SAPoliceService (SAPS) are immense, but they are not insurmountable. To effectively combat crime and ensure community safety, we must address these issues head-on and restore the integrity of the SAPS.

Herewith some of the key points I raised that will also be considered for budget amendments to better serve South Africans:

Collaborative Efforts:
-Engage police unions, civil rights bodies, the private security industry, and other law enforcement agencies.
-Protect whistleblowers like Babita Deokaran, whose assassination remains unresolved.

Community Policing:
-Revise the SAPS Act for uniformity across all regions.
-Clarify the roles of neighborhood watches and other anti-crime stakeholders.

Discipline and Integrity:
-Apply discipline fairly and consistently within the police service.
-Address the imbalance in punishment severity between low-ranking and high-ranking officers.
-Optimize management performance across all levels, not just senior management.

Organizational Structure:
-Avoid appointing unnecessary senior managers.
-Continue efforts to reduce the number of Deputy National Commissioners.

Promotion and Meritocracy:
-Promote experienced ground-level members.
-Prevent the appointment of incompetent officers based on connections.

Capacity Building:
-Address shortages in Crime Intelligence and Detective Services.
-Enhance training and human resource capacity in core service areas.

Effective Prosecutions:
-Ensure the Criminal Justice System functions harmoniously.
-Prevent serious offenders from obtaining bail arbitrarily.

Wellness Programs:
-Improve wellness programs for SAPS members.
-Focus on psycho-social interventions to support members' mental health.

Combatting Corruption:
-Address ongoing fraud and corruption within the police service.
-Investigate scandals at training academies, such as those in Philippi.

Funding and Resource Allocation:
-Utilize appropriated funds effectively to serve communities.
-Focus on improving ground-level resources and growing detective services.

South Africa is experiencing a crisis with over 85 murders daily. We must aggressively combat this violent scourge and ensure that our police service operates with integrity and efficiency.

Together, we can restore public trust in our police service and create safe and secure communities for all.

The @Our_DA urges that spending must focus on improving ground-level resources, growing detective services, re-establishing specialised units, and the restructuring of crime intelligence units.

I urge fellow South Africans to continue being vigilant in monitoring the negotiations for a national coalition government. A principled coalition govt should be something we strive for obviously for a)the protection of our sovereignty, b) advancement of our citizens quality of life and c) promotion of our national interests which are bigger than political party interests. Possible? I believe so. How? Here are some preliminary ideas.

1) Allow the top parties that qualify for representation to parliament to nominate 10 non political ‘elders or reps’ on a pro-rata basis to package the principles and moderate the negotiations on a strict and tight timeline

2) Strictly adhere to the constitution

3) Prioritize the 5 key objectives of the National Development Plan as the basis for the establishment of the coalition government

4) Insist and assert the rule of law

5) Define the performance and evaluation of the new government and place it under parliament monitoring (review twice yearly)

6) Allow the horse-trading to take place within reasonable time ( 14 days maybe)

7) Commit not to collapse government for at least 18 months. Threats of walkouts etc should lead to expulsion from the negotiated government.

8) Elect and approve the new government, President and cabinet within 21 days.

These are my preliminary thoughts. We can improve on them. What do you think?
