He beat the state of Missouri at the Supreme Court of the United States and won the right to attend law school. Three months later, Lloyd Gaines was never seen again. Not once. Ever.

He was a valedictorian denied a legal education because Missouri had no law school that would admit a Black man — the state offered instead to pay his tuition to leave. He refused, and sued.

In 1938 the Supreme Court ruled for him: a state that provides a law school must provide one for its Black citizens. A landmark on the road to Brown.

He got hate mail by the sack. He was, by his own letters, exhausted and alone.

Then, in March 1939, he vanished.

Missouri's response to his disappearance was to move to dismiss his case — for failure to appear.
