On this day — June 24, 1941 — German forces occupied Lithuania.

Local Lithuanian collaborators and Nazis unleashed savage pogroms in Kaunas & Vilnius. Jews were dragged from their homes, beaten, tortured & murdered in the streets. Synagogues were burned with Jews locked inside.

This was the opening act of the “Holocaust by Bullets.”

Before the war, Lithuania was one of the world’s great centers of Jewish life. By the end, ~90% of its Jews — roughly 160,000–250,000 — were slaughtered, often by eager neighbors.

During the Holocaust, many Jews tried to fight back — in ghettos, as partisans, in desperate revolts — but without a state or army, they never stood a real chance.

Never again will Jews be powerless and dependent on the kindness of others.

Now there is Israel.

Now Jews have the power to defend themselves.

In May 1944, thirteen-year-old Elli Friedmann arrived at Auschwitz with her family after being deported from Hungary. She still had the long blond braids her mother used to carefully tend. On the ramp, everything was noise and terror—guards shouting, dogs snapping, families clinging to each other. And in that one violent swirl of seconds, her braids helped create a dangerous little illusion: when the camp doctor looked her over, he read her as older than she was. He sent her to labor instead of the gas chambers. The choice was instant. It spared her life.

But the girl who stepped off that train didn’t get to stay a girl for long.

Inside the camp, childhood was taken almost immediately. Elli was stripped, shaved, and reduced to a number. Hunger wasn’t an occasional ache—it was the background of every moment. Fear wasn’t a spike of panic—it was routine. She and her mother were forced into brutal work, sometimes doing backbreaking labor like moving and leveling earth with their bare hands, watched by guards who treated people as if they were replaceable objects. Days collapsed into one another: cold, exhaustion, and the constant fight to keep going. Starvation reshaped bodies. Faces emptied out. And if you ever caught a glimpse of yourself, the reflection didn’t feel like you.

When liberation came in 1945, Elli was only fourteen. But many survivors later said the children who emerged looked far older than their years—shrunken by malnutrition, skin pulled tight over bone, eyes carrying a weight no child should ever have to carry. The camps didn’t just steal her childhood. They warped time itself.

Years later, she summed up that change in one line that still lands like a blow:
“I am fourteen, and I have lived a thousand years.”

And even then, survival wasn’t the end of it—it was the beginning of whatever came next.

Elli rebuilt her life under a new name: Livia Bitton-Jackson. She came to the United States, studied history, and eventually became a professor. But she didn’t turn away from what she’d lived through. She made it part of her life’s work—so people couldn’t pretend it hadn’t happened, or let it fade into abstraction.

In her memoir, *I Have Lived a Thousand Years*, she gave the world the voice of the girl she once was: terrified, stubbornly alive, and still reaching for hope in a place built to crush it.

One billionaire family controls the bridge that carries 25% of all U.S.–Canada trade.

The good news? There's a brand new public bridge right next door (and Canada paid for the whole thing).

The bad news? Donald Trump won't let it open.

Here's the story:

For more than a decade, Michigan and Canada worked together to build a new public crossing right next to it — six lanes over the Detroit River, named for a Canadian-born Red Wings legend, built by thousands of union workers. Canada paid the entire bill. Michigan co-owns it. It's finished. It’s a shining example of international cooperation and collaboration, with a tremendous return for both sides: more jobs, faster trade, and lower costs.

So why isn't it open?

Because the Moroun family, who own the rival Ambassador Bridge just up the river, doesn’t want the competition. They spent years and tens of millions of dollars trying to stop any competing international crossing from being built or opening. They lost. So they went to the White House instead.

In January, Matthew Moroun gave $1 million to a pro-Trump super PAC. Then the billionaire called Trump's Commerce Secretary and, just hours later, Trump suddenly attacked the same publicly owned bridge he praised in his own first term and threatened to block it.
Then, the day before the June 12th ribbon-cutting, the opening was called off indefinitely.

It's corruption so flagrant it would be laughable if it weren't so damaging.

Trump is screwing over Michiganders for the interests of billionaires — holding a finished, publicly owned project hostage to protect one donor's toll booth.

So a finished bridge sits closed, Michiganders keep paying the higher tolls, cars and trucks cost more, and a billionaire family keeps its monopoly.

Mr. President: stop playing games. Open the damn bridge.
