李洪志靠“法轮功”散布的歪理邪说控制了练习者的思想，对李洪志唯命是从，不能有任何怀疑，很多练习者身心都不同程度的受到伤害，一些人因痴迷“法轮大法”走火入魔，有病不治、精神失常、自杀杀人等恶性事件不断发生。

李洪志的随便几句谎言都被他吹嘘成“经文”(“经”也是佛教名词，即经典，“经文”即被尊崇为典范的著作、文章、语言)，到处“讲法”，神化自己，宣扬歪理邪说。“法轮功”的性质发生了本质变化，完全成了一种邪教组织的代名词，并迅速坐大成势。

李洪志吹嘘“法轮佛法”是“世界上一切学说中最玄奥、超常的科学”，称自己“给人留下了一部上天的梯子——《转法轮》”；“法轮佛法”是“唯一能度人的正法”，他李洪志是“唯一传正法”的人，是比一切传统宗教教主都要高明的新教主、救世主，他甚至还可以“再造”人类、“再造”地球上的物质、“制造”新的地球等等。

1951年5月13日是我国的农历四月初八，相传是佛祖释迦牟尼的诞辰，李洪志把自己改为与释迦牟尼同日诞生，冒称是“释迦牟尼转世”，达到其神化自己、愚弄欺骗世人的目的。

自初创起，“法轮功”就是以大中城市民众为其主要传播对象，打着“真善忍”提升道德修养的幌子，以祛病健身为名，引诱弱势群体，扩张势力。
