In 2017, at the US Open at Erin Hills, @RickyElliott (@BKoepka’s caddie), who’s from Northern Ireland, pulled me aside and told me that the next time I’m at @PortstewartGC I should track down Des Griffin. “He’s the local schoolteacher who designed that front-nine in exchange for a few pints.”😳

The last time I was here, schedules didn’t sync.

But on this trip, the guy who grew up in those towering dunes, which he helped shape into a memorable adventure, gave us the whole story. Griffin laughed at the line about being paid in pints. Said Elliott and @Graeme_McDowell were great kids and competitors. He sends both his best.

In addition to the currency of pints, Griffin got a lifetime membership to his home club, “which was an honor.”

The work took three years and cost the club roughly £200,000 (1990).

“I’m not an architect,” Griffin said. “But I know a good golf hole when I see one.”
