Every EV, every solar storage system, every phone battery on Earth runs on lithium and India has almost none of it domestically.....
Lithium, cobalt, nickel all imported, all subject to global price swings and geopolitical chokepoints, the exact same vulnerability with rare earth magnets.
Dr. Vilas Shelke and Dr. Manjusha Shelke, a husband-wife scientist duo, founded a company called Rechargion Energy in 2021. Rechargion is trying to make that dependency optional by building battery cells that need none of those three metals at all.
Dr. Manjusha Shelke is also a Chief Scientist at CSIR's National Chemical Laboratory, India's premier government chemistry research institute.
This is not a garage startup pivoting into hardware, it is an official spin-off from NCL, built directly on the work of Shelke's own research group, which is why the science checks out rather than being marketing.
Sodium-ion batteries using sodium instead of lithium as the ion that moves and stores charge....
The company has patented its own hard carbon anode material, proprietary electrode materials, and sodium compounds, and this is the elegant part.....
The sodium is derived from seawater and aluminium, 2 things India has in near-infinite domestic supply, unlike lithium.
Rechargion's cells have demonstrated a cycle life of 10,000 charge cycles translating into a potential battery life of 25+ years. A typical lithium-ion EV battery today lasts ~8-10 years before serious degradation.
This is claiming ~3x that, using metals that do not need to be imported at all.
Why it is credible, not just a claim....
- In August 2025, the Automotive Research Association of India ran an independent 2 month evaluation of Rechargion's cells at its Chakan testing centre covering vibration, mechanical shock, crushing, high-temperature endurance, short circuit, overcharge, and forced discharge, under the international IEC 62660 protocol.
- Rechargion became the 1st company in India to achieve IEC 62660 compliance for sodium-ion batteries, independent, govt body verified safety testing, not a startup's own lab claims.
Rechargion is almost entirely non-VC, which is itself telling, support has come from the Union Ministry of Heavy Industries, the Indo-US Science and Technology Forum, Tata Power-backed Social Alpha, ARAI, Venture Centre Pune, and Rice University, Houston.
This is patient, institutional, science-first capital, not hype-chasing venture money.
A pilot plant installed in 2024 is already producing 10 Ah capacity cells, and the company is now building a facility to scale to 500 cells per day, moving from lab research into actual commercial manufacturing with an initial focus on India's massive electric two and three-wheeler market.
Why this matters for Bharat...
India's entire EV ambition currently rests on a mineral India does not have. If sodium-ion chemistry proves out at scale, the country's electric mobility future stops depending on lithium mines in Australia and Chile and starts depending on seawater and aluminium resources India actually controls.
A husband-wife scientist team out of a Pune government lab, quietly building the battery chemistry that could make India's EV revolution genuinely self-reliant. 🙏🙏
Open the Caraka-Saṃhitā, the foundational text of internal medicine, the one every Ayurveda student still studies and the very 1st thing it does is not introduce Caraka.
It opens with a man named Punarvasu Ātreya, teaching 6 students in what was, functionally, the world's oldest documented medical seminar.
Ātreya ran a school of medicine at Takṣaśilā, in the 6th century BCE Gandhāra region, the same intellectual hub that would later produce Pāṇini's grammar and draw students from across the subcontinent.
Ātreya gathered 6 pupils: Agniveśa, Bhela, Jātūkarṇa, Parāśara, Hārīta, Kṣārapāṇi and taught them everything he knew about disease, the body, and treatment through spoken discourse, the way knowledge traveled before it was reliably written down.
Then he did something almost unheard of for a teacher: he turned it into a competition.....
Each of his 6 students was told to write down everything they had learned, independently, in the form of a treatise.
All 6 manuscripts were then submitted to an assembly of scholars for review. One student's version was judged the clearest, most complete, most useful and it was that student's text, not the teacher's own words, that survived and became the trunk of the tree.
That student's name was Agniveśa . His treatise became known as the Agniveśa Saṃhitā/Tantra.
Centuries later, a physician named Caraka took Agniveśa's manuscript, revised it, expanded it, and re-edited it into the form we now call the Caraka-Saṃhitā and it is Caraka's name on the spine, Caraka's name in every textbook, Caraka who gets called one of the three fathers of Ayurveda.
Ātreya, the actual originator of the ideas, the man who trained the student, who trained the editor, who trained the discipline is barely a footnote outside specialist circles.
And it gets stranger still: of the other 5 students who sat in that same classroom, only fragments of one other manuscript, the Bhela saṃhitā survive at all, in a single damaged palm-leaf copy sitting today in a library in Thanjavur, and one lonely surviving page preserved in Berlin.
4 other complete, original treatises on ancient Indian medicine, written by trained physicians in that same founding classroom, are simply gone. :((
Not lost to fire / invasion that we know of....just gone, the ordinary way things vanish when no one keeps copying them.
The book everyone reveres remembers the editor. It has almost entirely forgotten the room where the knowledge was actually born.
Can you guess what this number is: 43 crore?
That is 430 million. Not vaccine doses. Not Aadhaar cards. Not UPI txns this time.
That is the number of free doctor consultations delivered by a govt telemedicine platform most urban Indians have never even heard of.
It is called eSanjeevani.....
And it might be the most quietly massive digital health system on the planet, bigger, by consultation volume, than any telemedicine platform any country has ever built, public / private.
Look at how fast this scaled, most people assume govt tech moves at govt speed.
This one did not....
- 2019: platform rolled out, mostly experimental.
- Mid-2020: crossed 3 million consultations, right as COVID lockdowns hit and OPDs across the country shut their doors.
- Within a couple more years: past 120 million.
- By January 2025: past 250 million.
- By November 2025: 430 million.
That is not linear growth. That is a curve that bent hard upward because a health worker sitting in a primary health centre in rural Chhattisgarh, with zero specialists for a 100 KMs, suddenly had a video line straight to a doctor at a district hospital.
How it actually works and why the model is smart:
- It runs on a hub & spoke system. 131,000+ rural health centres (the "spokes") connect to ~17,000 hospital hubs.
- A nurse / health worker at a village level centre does the first line consultation and if it needs a specialist, they do not send the patient on a bus ride to the nearest city. They connect them, live, on video, right there.
- And this is not a niche pilot anymore, 93%+ of all usage runs through this doctor to doctor model, meaning it has become genuine day to day rural healthcare infrastructure, not a COVID-era stopgap.
A few more fascinating data points for people mostly doubting any govt run schemes:
- 57% of beneficiaries are women, the demographic that has historically had the hardest time physically travelling to a city hospital for a routine consultation.
- 12% are senior citizens. This is reaching exactly the population that private telemedicine apps, built for smartphone literate urban users with credit cards, were never going to reach.
1 of the largest single interventions in healthcare access in human history, built quietly, by an Indian govt lab (C-DAC), running almost invisibly in the background of "Digital India" headlines that usually go to UPI and Aadhaar instead.
Bharat is rising. 🙏🙏
A while ago, I was arguing for having diploma holders as first line responders for medical needs and referring to cases only when need arises. This is even more amazing.
Meet Shamsher, who is deaf and mute, but his skills speak volumes! He built this incredible working hydraulic excavator model all by himself using simple syringes and tubing. Absolutely amazing craftsmanship!
