Deeply concerned by the arrest of 24-year-old Tamil hip hop artist Sangeethsan Ganeskumar (known as Hiphop Sangee) in Sri Lanka under the draconian Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA). Criminalizing an artist for expressing his identity and sharing music is a flagrant violation of free speech.

Freedom of expression is a fundamental pillar of any democracy. Yet, consecutive Sri Lankan governments have repeatedly promised the international community they would repeal the PTA, only to break those promises and continue weaponizing it to silence dissent.

Since the height of the Tamil genocide in 2009, Tamils still live under intense military surveillance and systemic oppression. Acts like this are a painful reminder of why projects like the Tamil Genocide Monument in Brampton are so vital. It is essential for community healing, remembrance, and raising global awareness about the ongoing plight of Tamils.

I call for the immediate release of Sangeethsan Ganeskumar and join global human rights organizations in demanding the total abolishment of the PTA. @ncctonline @AnitaAnandMP @gary_srp @TheThanigasalam @LoganKanapathi @NeethanShan

ஒவ்வொரு தெருவிலும் சென்றபோது அங்கு நான் உருவாக்கிய விளையாட்டரங்கம், பூங்கா, முதல்வர் படைப்பகம், நூலகம், திருமண மாளிகை, பேருந்து நிலையம், மருத்துவமனை, பள்ளிக்கூடங்கள், கல்லூரிகள் போன்றவற்றைக் கண்டு என் கடமையைச் சரிவர ஆற்றியிருப்பதில் மனநிறைவு கொண்டேன்.

உணர்ச்சிப் பெருக்கோடு என் நன்றியை ஏற்றுக்கொண்ட கொளத்தூர் மக்களுக்காக என்றும் நான் உண்மையாக உழைப்பேன். உங்களோடுதான் நான் என்றும் இருப்பேன்.

I travelled through Great Nicobar today.

These are the most extraordinary forests I have ever seen in my life. Trees older than memory. Forests that took generations to grow.

The people on this island are equally beautiful - both the adivasi communities and the settlers - but they are being robbed of what is rightfully theirs.

The government calls what it is doing here a “Project.” What I have seen is not a project. It is millions of trees marked for the axe. It is 160 square kilometres of rainforest condemned to die. It is communities that have been ignored while their homes have been snatched away.

This is not development. This is destruction dressed in development’s language.

So I will say it plainly, and I will keep saying it: what is being done in Great Nicobar is one of the biggest scams and gravest crimes against this country’s natural and tribal heritage in our lifetime.

It must be stopped. And it can be stopped - if Indians choose to see what I have seen.
