Every year, thousands of South Africans try to start something, a spaza shop, a small agency, a delivery business, and every year most of them get failed before they've even opened their doors.

The 2026 Global Entrepreneurship Monitor just confirmed it in numbers, South Africa scored 3.9 out of 10 on its National Entrepreneurship Context Index, placing us 7th lowest out of 56 countries and miles below the global average of 4.7.

It's not for lack of ambition, the report itself notes South Africa has a sophisticated financial sector, solid universities and a growing base of incubators, yet still ranks worse than India, China, Indonesia and Brazil, because access to finance, government support and basic infrastructure keep letting entrepreneurs down long before the market ever gets a say.

Prof Natanya Meyer, who co-authored the report, said the score hasn't moved from the year before, proof the problems are known and simply not being fixed.
