Today, global dental giants are sprinting to launch Activated Charcoal lines, charging a premium for the charcoal revolution. But in 1925, a physician in a small Kerala village was already selling it in paper pouches. The British mocked it as primitive ash, while secretly, their own officers used it to scrub away the stubborn stains that Imperial White paste could not touch. An indian invented Biological Magnetism 100 yrs before the West could put a marketing name on it.
K.P. Namboodiri, an Ayurvedic physician, realized that the British were fundamentally wrong about the science. When paddy husk is charred at a specific temperature, it creates a micro-porous structure almost identical to what we now call Activated Carbon.
Namboodiri infused the ash with Pepper, Clove, & Ginger. The black carbon acted as a magnet (adsorption) to pull toxins & stains out of the gums, while the spices provided the thermal healing. He was practicing Molecular Chemistry in a small Kerala village decades before Western brands understood that carbon is the most efficient way to detoxify the mouth.
The British tried to market their white powders as a symbol of The New India... the educated, clean, Westernized Indian. Namboodiri flipped the script. He made his Black Ash a symbol of Vedic Purity. In the 1920s & 30s, the most orthodox Brahmins & the most radical revolutionaries in the South both used the Black Powder.
It became a silent way to identify who had rejected the British lifestyle. If your gums were slightly tinted with the dark residue of charred husk in the morning, it was a badge of honor. It said: "My mouth is cleaned by the soil of my ancestors, not the chalk of the King."
British dental companies tried to run smear campaigns against Black Powders, claiming they were abrasive. Namboodiri’s powder was so fine that it actually had a lower RDA (Relative Dentin Abrasivity) than the British chalk-based powders. It was physically impossible for the British to prove it was harmful.
The Black Powder was so effective at removing the stubborn stains of Betel Leaf (Paan) & Tobacco that even British officers in the South reportedly bought it in secret. They could not get their Imperial White pastes to remove the deep stains of Indian life, so they relied on Namboodiri’s Ash behind closed doors.
For 90 yrs, global giants like Colgate & Pepsodent spent millions on advertising to tell Indians that Black is Bad & White is Bright. In the late 2010s, those same companies launched Charcoal toothpastes at a luxury price point. They are now using the exact same tech K.P. Namboodiri was selling for a few annas in 1925.
If we look at a modern, high-end Activated Charcoal tube today, we are looking at a 100 yr old apology to K.P. Namboodiri. He was not backward; he was a century ahead of the global dental industry. The British used Chalk (a sedimentary rock) because it was cheap & looked clean. Namboodiri used Paddy Husk (a life-giving grain) because it was biological & functional.
K.P. Namboodiri’s legacy is the story of a man who looked at the waste of a rice field & saw a diamond. He took the blackest substance he could find & used it to give India its brightest smile.
More than 6000 cases of arson, loot, murder and rape were reported during 2021 post poll violence. A BJP functionary sent me a folder containing hundreds of videos and gory pictures. Police was doing absolutely nothing. There were other videos which showed women claiming they were being summoned by TMC Muslim functionaries to spend nights at their homes as punishment for their campaigning for BJP. One frightened young man was sending SOS messages. His house had been visited by TMC goons more than once. The boy had locked himself inside his house. His last WhatsApp call came post midnight. In a trembling voice he said “Sir ye log aaj raat ko mujhe maar dalenge”. All that myself and others could do in this situation was post those videos, pictures on SM and send messages to people we knew. The boy did survive that night. But those few days and nights were enough to make anyone insane. The fear in that voice and the barbarity in those videos is something I will carry till my last breath. I will be candid. My belief in democracy was shaken that day. Democracy, a system of governance which was conceived for the well being of people had itself become a reason for repeated orgies of violence. And what was worse- Central intervention, in this state of absolute lawlessness, was being calibrated on the scale of political correctness. “How would it be prudent to invoke 355 or 356 against a Govt which had just won such a huge mandate”, “Wouldn’t it further raise Mamata’s stock as a politician”, “What if the Supreme Court dismissed 356 imposition”? All sorts of questions were being deliberated while people in the state continued to suffer. And for what? For exercising their democratic choice. Democracy had descended into mobocracy, and nobody had the moral courage to call out that bluff. The very powers enshrined in a Federal democracy had become an instrument for the hunters to keep the vulnerable birds captive in a cage. My biggest grudge with PM Modi will also remain his inaction after that violence. Maddened opposition and TMC supporters were dismissive about the whole thing. Some even said that “Political violence is Bengal’s culture”. Political bitterness of the last two decades has made me understand that there will always be some psychos who will defend everything including rapes and murders because of their political proclivities. But ethnic and linguistic conceit from nationalists is something I have still not come to terms with. “Bengal is not everyone’s cup of tea. There is no dearth of pundits who pretend to know how to straighten the province from their high seats” It is not difficult to sense the contempt and loathing beneath the supposed verbal eloquence. How dare a non Bengali comment on anything related to Bengal. One can have opinions about UP, Bihar, Haryana and Gujarat. But Bengal! No Sirs, Bengal is not an enigma. While the country appreciates Bengali art and aesthetics, respects its icons more than the Bengalis themselves, the state’s continuous decay is all too apparent in its cold numbers. Its culture of political violence is a shame for 21st century India. But for the war like mobilisation of troops in the state, this election too would have left many dead. Nobody knows what will happen on May 4th. May BJP win. But the spectre of violence looms over the state if TMC returns to power. Maybe not immediately but after a month or two. Maybe sporadically and randomly, and not as a pogrom like last time. In many of my replies I made it clear that the comments were not meant to broad brush the state. But even supposed intellectuals chose vanity over nuance. Mobilising lakhs of troops every election is keeping democracy on a ventilator. A radical solution has to be found to restore normal democracy. Any way, I have deleted my Original Post. Not because I care for regional chauvinists but because I value request from a friend.

Bhimbetka, 10,000-1,000 years ago. Look at this person—struggling to tie his dhoti. 👴
Your great-great-great (×400) grandfather had the same wardrobe malfunction you do every wedding season.

What else hasn't changed?

"Ambushed"
#UntoldStoryArmy
During a military training course in Mhow, India, the 1962 war with China broke out. My course was cancelled, and everyone returned to their units. However, I received special orders to stay put and await further instructions. Two days later, my posting to Jammu and Kashmir arrived – with immediate reporting required.
Having driven my car to Mhow, I had no choice but to take it back to Punjab, leave it there, and then travel on to J&K. Pressed for time, I decided to drive straight from Mhow to Delhi, a risky decision. One particularly dangerous stretch was between Gwalior and Agra, notorious for bandits and lawlessness.
Traveling alone at night through this area was foolish, but I pressed on in my trusty Hindustan-14. Around midnight, approaching a narrow pass through low hills, I found the road blocked by a fallen tree. It was an ambush. Turning back wasn't an option.
As I stopped, armed men materialized, their faces hidden. They searched me for valuables, taking my watch and wallet before moving on to my car and luggage. However, things took an unexpected turn when someone announced a "Sardar" had arrived.
Every one pulled back a little and there appeared a sturdy young man with a large mustache. As he drew near, he suddenly sprung to attention and gave me a smart salute and said ‘Sahib Ji, tussee ethay ki kar rahey ho.’ (Sir what are you doing here!)
From his voice and his face, latter day mustache notwithstanding, I recognized him. He was my tank gunner and had been discharged after his seven-year tenure of engagement. Those days soldiers were discharged after seven years and given no pension.
I responded to his query and asked him,’ Nahar Singh toon aye ki kam pharya hai (Nahar Singh what is this work you have taken on.) He said, ‘Sahib Ji admi nu kuch na kuch taan karna chaheda hai, welay beth kaay vi ki karna hai.’ (Sir one must do, some or the other work and there is no point in sitting idle!)
I told him, ‘tenu aasi eh taan nahi sakhlaya’ (we did not train you for such activity.) “Sahib ji tohati ambush laney di sikhlai kam ahh rahi hai. Sadi ambush wich koe nuks hai!.” (Sir your training in laying an ambush is proving useful. Do you find any fault with our ambush.)
He responded with a loud chuckle. He addressed his gang and said. “Dekheya sadhi regiment de officer kiney deelair hun, ekelay he rat nu is sarak tay chal rahey hun.” (do you see how brave are the officers of our regiment. They travel alone on this road at night.)
I asked him if his wife knew what work he was doing. To this he answered “Sarian gallaan wife nu thorian dassidian hun.
(You don’t disclose everything to your wife. She thinks I am working for the police). At this one of them interjected that, “Police whi ehhoo kam kardi hai.” (Police too does this sort of work).
This raised much laughter amongst them. Then he told his men not to just stand watching but to quickly make tea for the sahib. All my stuff was put back in the car, and my watch and wallet returned. After a cup of tea and much bonhomie and handshaking I took leave of Nahar Singh and his gang.

@RShivshankar They would have happily done it, if we had our Windos, MS Office, Adobe, Coreldraw, etc. We are just code writers, not software developers.
Sri Lanka was bailed out by India. Myanmar is fighting a civil war. Thailand and Cambodia, both buddhist nations, are fighting over a Hindu temple. China kicked out Dalai Lama from Tibet. Tibet's Government in Exile is in India for decades.
Not belittling Buddhists. But..
