Kim Jong-un watched this.

The Iranian leadership watched this.

Every government on Earth that was considering what compliance with Western demands actually produces watched this.

Gaddafi is the lesson.

Not the lesson the West wants to teach.

The lesson history actually teaches.

The empire does not reward disarmament.

It schedules it.

Korea.

There are Americans alive today who cannot tell you a single thing about Korea before the war.

Before the 38th parallel.

Before the "police action" that killed three million people.

They don't know that Korea was a Japanese colony from 1910 to 1945, during which the Japanese conducted a systematic campaign to erase Korean language, culture, and national identity.

They don't know that when Japan was defeated in 1945, Korea was arbitrarily divided at the 38th parallel.

Not by Koreans.

By two American military planners, Dean Rusk and Charles Bonesteel, working with a National Geographic map.

The division had nothing to do with Korean geography, Korean politics, or Korean consent.

They don't know that the division immediately produced a humanitarian catastrophe, splitting families, separating farmers from their land, dividing an economy that had functioned as a unit.

They don't know that both the northern and southern governments believed in Korean reunification and that the question of who started the Korean War is genuinely more complicated than American history acknowledges.

They just know:

North Korea is the enemy.

A crazy, nuclear, cartoon villain of a country whose people are starving.

They do not know that the United States bombed North Korea so comprehensively during the war that American commanders reported there was nothing left to bomb.

That 75 to 80 percent of North Korean cities were destroyed.

That a generation of North Koreans grew up with no memory of a time before American bombers overhead.

You want to know why North Korea wants nuclear weapons?

Ask what happened to countries that didn't have them when America decided they were the enemy.

Iraq.

Libya.

Then ask what happened to North Korea itself.

The nuclear program is not insanity.

It is the lesson.

The Cuban Missile Crisis is taught in American schools as the moment the world almost ended because the Soviets put nuclear weapons in Cuba.

It is almost never taught as:

The moment the United States discovered what it felt like to have nuclear weapons pointed at it from nearby, which was the permanent reality of every Soviet city that had lived under American nuclear targeting from bases in Turkey, Italy, and Britain for years before the Cuban deployment.

The Soviets put missiles in Cuba specifically because the United States had missiles in Turkey pointed at Soviet cities.

Kennedy's team knew this.

They negotiated a secret deal: the Soviets would remove the Cuban missiles, the Americans would remove the Turkish missiles.

The American removal was kept secret from the public for decades because admitting it would have revealed that the resolution of the crisis was a mutual concession, not an American victory, and that the Soviet position had a strategic logic that American audiences were not supposed to understand.

The lesson taught to American children:

Soviet aggression.
American resolve.
Crisis averted.

The lesson the Soviets drew:

We deployed the weapons. We achieved the withdrawal of the Turkish missiles. We established that the Americans will negotiate when the cost becomes real.

The lesson for everyone watching:

Deterrence works in both directions.

That is why the powerful try so hard to ensure it only flows in one.

This is a huge story: Samsung and SK Hynix, both massive South Korean tech conglomerates, are studying replacing U.S. chip-making machinery with Chinese equivalents in their China factories, because they're worried the U.S. might tighten export controls in a way that'd render their U.S. machinery unusable.

Very concretely, it means that if those companies were pressured by the US to abandon their Chinese facilities, they'd rather switch to fully Chinese indigenous mode than comply.

Which makes sense: for both these companies, China is both their factory floor and their customer. About 40% of Samsung's NAND and 30–45% of SK Hynix's memory output comes from Chinese fabs. If the US forces that kind of choice, it won't get the answer it wants.

It also highlights how little trust there now is in the US: the media always mention the so-called "China threat" but, if you follow the money, top firms from supposed "US allies" are clearly more worried about the "US threat" than they are about Beijing.
