The Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD–West Africa) launched its Strategic Plan for 2026–2030, a roadmap for advancing democracy, peace, and development across the region.

At a time of shifting political realities in West Africa, the convening brought together policymakers, academics, development partners, and civil society actors to reflect on what the next phase of governance must look like.

ECOWAS COMMISSION COMMENDS COUNCIL OF THE WISE IN AT THE CLOSING SESSION OF THEIR RETREAT IN ACCRA

The ECOWAS Commission commended the Council of the Wise for its sustained contribution to preventive diplomacy, early warning and conflict prevention across West Africa, underscoring its strategic role in supporting regional peace, security and stability. The Commission highlighted the Council’s ability to anticipate emerging risks, provide timely advisory support and guide decision-making processes in complex political and security contexts.

The retreat reaffirmed the importance of strengthening expert advisory mechanisms and leveraging accumulated experience to enhance governance responses and crisis prevention efforts. It also emphasized the need to consolidate ECOWAS’ peace and security architecture through proactive engagement, institutional coordination and the continued involvement of seasoned mediators in advancing sustainable peace across the region.

ECOWAS CONVENES THEMATIC CONSULTATIONS TO REPOSITION THE COMMUNITY FOR A CHANGING GLOBAL ORDER

The Department of Political Affairs, Peace and Security (PAPS) of the Economic Community of West African States has commenced a three-day high-level thematic consultation in Lagos from 24th –27th February 2026, aimed at redefining the future of the Community and strengthening its strategic partnerships amid an increasingly complex global landscape.

Held against the backdrop of rising geostrategic rivalries, the evolving role of Bretton Woods institutions, rapid digital transformation, and the growing influence and misuse of artificial intelligence, autonomous weapons, and disinformation, the consultations come at a time when West Africa is becoming an arena of intensified global competition.

Maj Gen AG LAKA, NCTC Coordinator, highlighted the need for cross-border collaboration to counter groups like Boko Haram, ISWAP, and Lakurawa. Hon. Minister of Defence, Mohamed Badaru Abubakar, called for a roadmap to strengthen regional security. The event, part of ECOWAS@50, aims to enhance intelligence sharing and non-kinetic measures like deradicalization.
