Senators will have their pay withheld if a government shutdown occurs, beginning in November on the day after Election Day. Senate just approved Louisiana GOP Senator John Kennedy's resolution by unanimous consent to make this change only impacting Senators. It does not apply to House members. Senators will receive their withheld pay once the government shutdown ends.
On Day 76 of the partial DHS shutdown, House by unanimous consent approved the Senate-unanimously passed bill funding DHS including Coast Guard, FEMA, TSA & U.S. Secret Service except ICE and CPB through Sept. 30th. Bill now heads to the White House.
March 29, 2026: Today is now the longest government shutdown in U.S. history as the partial DHS funding lapse hits 44 days and counting, passing the previous 43-day record of a full government shutdown which ended in mid-November. Both the Senate & House are on recess for 2 weeks over the Easter & Passover holidays, with no votes scheduled until April 13 & 14 respectively as the stalemate on funding DHS continues. @cspan
