WEDNESDAY RECAP:
Christie’s Art+Tech Summit, Day One!
It feels like an important event to reflect on, especially at this stage of digital art.
Here’s the long (too long, definitely didn’t read) mental reconstruction of a day filled with content and participants:
~8:30am:
Open the door to Christie’s. Off we go. There is something about the staircase from first to second floor that gets me, in the best of ways.
~8:31am:
Immediately see @RDToTheMoon and @im_jonooo then @VinnieHager and @otherworld_xx. The party has started.
~8:35am:
A favorite moment. I feel a tap on the shoulder, and it is a first encounter with someone I’ve long respected and talked with only digitally: @refikanadol.
~8:40am:
Snap a few shots of the @niceaunties displays. The artist’s commission for attendees, a Christie’s first since the Lost Robbies, is perfect.
9:00am:
Opening, well-spoken keynote from Christie’s CEO @gcerutti. Most intriguing is an almost immediate lean in to Lost Robbies lore. Once discarded in 2018 and now a badge of honor!
9:30am:
Panel one. Refik is a standout on the mic. His mantra of “joy, inspiration, and hope” is infectious. Marcus Fox is an ideal collaborator, serious and sharp.
10:00am:
Panel two. The AI theme is strong this year. Fun scheduling that @obv_ious (one of the artist trio with a second in audience) takes the stage while their artwork is live in Christie’s auction countdown. It goes on to close for $35,280 (4-5x estimate).
10:30am:
Panel three. Many gems in this one. @SarahMeyohas is not just an amazing artist. She is now my favorite moderator (coming from someone who loves a good moderation). Engaged, prepared, and thoughtful.
11:00am:
Panel four. @kevinolearytv brings a dose of investment side realism. He underscores AI’s importance but often in conjunction with other tools (not as a magical sole solution). It’s “Show Me” time for AI, as he cautions against getting too “hyped out”.
11:30am:
Panel five. Wide ranging one in which @Sol_Rashidi leaned into what became a familiar topic: the importance of efficient energy for AI.
12:00pm:
Lunch break is a blur. A few minutes with the sharp @andrewjiang and @jhysum. An always welcome collision with @KeithGrossman and intro to @Zhuk_live. Time with the legend @SamEwen and @SupermodelGamer. Rally with the @TransientLabs squad. First in person with @DrewAustin. 15 minute lunch to gather thoughts. Let’s get back to it.
1:00pm:
Panel six. Luxury theme is underway. Marie-Claire Daveau is a dynamo. She lays out pragmatic steps for sustainability applicable anywhere: lead by example and set quantifiable targets.
1:30pm:
Panel seven. @gabrielahearst offers a strong, feel good connection between values of her youth and current priorities in sustainable luxury.
2:00pm:
Panel eight. For the NFT space, a polarizing conversation. Helen Aboah was a force on the mic, expressing the importance of physical experience and doubt as to whether AI usage can replicate the magic of “owning a piece of the artist”, citing Picasso.
2:30pm:
Panel nine. Vintage, vintage, vintage. It’s the buzzword and trend. Appreciated @nickyads statement that the magic is in the middle ground: belong to a tribe *and* be one of a kind within it.
3:00pm:
Panel ten. @liorcole eloquently vocalized her goal of reverse engineering the gap between inspiration and creation. Introspection > technical.
3:30pm:
Panel eleven. Whitney McGuire of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum voiced a curator’s important role, the “mouthpiece for sustainability”.
4:00pm:
The twelfth and final panel saw a full house for Apple co-founder @stevewoz, who delighted with quotes and brought the house down with prank references. “Happiness = Smiles - Frowns” is now embedded in the culture with @beeple honoring the quote with an on-site Everyday.
5:00pm:
The day concludes with a @HivemindCap hello, @sashastiles meeting, @EfdotStudio hang, and a conversation about vanilla ice cream with @jessewoolston.
End scene. Onward to Day Two!
Next week will be a big one for AI Art at @ChristiesInc Auction:
1- A lost Robbie (220E-320E)
2- Shinjitai by @clairesilver (35-45E)
3- Suffice Nuance by @bottoproject (10-15E)
4- Alien xenoGANg by @VanArman (8-10E)
5- Cellular Tapestry by @entangledothers (3-5E)
Do people realize Gucci is launching a major on-chain auction starting tomorrow in partnership with Christie's?
It's called "Future Frequencies" and features work at the "intersection of fashion, art & technology."
Artists include Robbie Barrat, Tyler Hobbs, Claire Silver, Emily Xie, William Mapan, Botto & more.
From the site description:
"With a focus on the interplay between autonomous systems and fashion, these digital artists create a fusion of disparate ecosystems by overlaying the industrial field of garment design and production onto the worlds of generative art and AI, which employ algorithms, modelling and data to simulate human-like intelligence and artistic output."
It's funny how many people claim to be experts on the "Lost Robbies." Only 5 people know what really happened: @videodrome@SuperRareJohn@rareperkins@SuperRareChar and myself. If curious, I'd recommend listening to the artist himself over influencers.
