Meiwes then carried out the kill!ng and consumed parts of Brandes's remains. He also recorded the encounter, and the recording became important evidence in the case.

The bizarre circumstances raised a major legal question in Germany: Can someone be convicted of murde? when the victim had apparently consented to being kilIed?

Meiwes was initially convicted of manslaughter in 2004 and sentenced to 8½ years. After a retrial, he was convicted of mu?der in 2006 and sentenced to life imprisonment.
