@dailycal They are not NIMBY's they just don't want this built in their backyard. These are BS reasons to oppose building housing in one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in Berkeley.
@karolkarpinski The large time share complexes in certain vacation markets like Florida or Hawaii work well for this. Don't buy the timeshare but you can book them though the hotel's website like Marriott and get a kitchen, larger space etc with professional management and cleaning
@lymanstoneky I am in Truckee California which is a top work from home community for people from the Bay Area. The billionaire properties on the lake are still booming but the typical places (800K to 1.2M) while still objectively expensive, are seeing longer times on market and price drops.
@Frenzie@nckwhlr@asymmetricinfo I had emergency appendix surgery in London during the deadly 2003 heat wave (heat waves have not only happened the past few years). Surgical suite had AC but the recovery ward did not and it was stiflingly hot and miserable. That hospital was build in the 1800s though.
@mnolangray That's nice for Houston but SF, San Jose and Seattle are 2-3X richer than Houston on a per capita basis and all still in the top 10 in growth rates. Houston has a long, long way to go to catch up.
@jaycaspiankang My son plays tennis and thankfully the high level youth tennis is so high level that it is not something he is interested in or really good enough to reach. He plays in a local East Bay league. Two practices a week, five matches each fall/spring on Friday nights. All local.
@lymanstoneky I do this all the time. If someone is a connection (or a connection of a connection) and it is a topic I am interested in I will happily spend some time on a survey. I do the Lutheran survey every year for example.
@thecavemommy In Germany the cabs had these little fold down booster seats in the back. Basically the backrest folded down to make a booster seat. I was like this is amazing for our 4 year old. I would love to buy a car in the US that did this or have US cabs/Ubers do this. Nope not allowed.
@lymanstoneky Maybe we need two different terms to describe people with high wages versus high assets (rich vs wealthy maybe) but it makes sense it is different because you can be rich with no income at all. Inherit $10M in stock , take a loan against it and have no income but you are rich.
@lymanstoneky If you live on your wages you are still middle class (albeit upper middle class). Rich is different in that you can live without wages at all. You can earn high enough wages to get rich over either a long or short amount of time investing but that does not make 250K a year rich.
@lymanstoneky Hmm. The one I would wonder about is modeling reading books versus scrolling social media as "the thing" you do together after dinner. And yes I acknowledge I am posting this on social media, in my (semi) defense my kid is in bed.
@lymanstoneky My land is an (ok-ish) investment asset (along with the arguably more valuable zoning permissions and utility connections that make it possible build something on that land). My house is a depreciating asset that only keeps it value through continuous maintenance and upkeep.
@lymanstoneky I wonder how much this varies by religion. I only have one great grand-parent who was an immigrant from Europe but the furthest back I have any ancestors born in the US is the mid-1840s. But they were all Catholics and there were very few Catholics in the US in 1810.
@mattyglesias As this driven by overly generous payments to Medicare Advantage. Looks like those are around 20% higher than traditional Medicare. Around 50% of seniors are in MA, so it reasons it is around 10% the cost of Medicare or $100B a year. That seems like real money.
@lymanstoneky I wonder at the methodology here. It seems low at 15% for 95-99 percentile. At 600K in wage income a single person with the standard deduction will pay about 30% total in FICA and Federal Income tax. Cap gains and itemizing will bring that down but not by that much.
@Noahpinion At least 5. Under/invisble class (homeless, prisoners, etc.), working class (aka working poor), middle class, upper class (high income from work) and wealthy class (high income just from investments). People tend to ignore the first one and collapse the last two into one.
