Confronting Gaze - 对视
Please keep attention on trafficked women in China.
请对中国被拐卖女性现状保持持续关注。

About the work:
I stood outside the Chinese Embassy, covered with the eyes of one hundred women who had been trafficked and sold into forced marriages in remote areas of China. They had been locked away, chained, raped, and forced to bear children throughout their lives.
Due to these unending incidents, today, I carried all their gaze on my body, and together with them, we completed a silent confrontation through our eyes with Chinese authorities.
We asked here:
Why are their cries ignored and their pain denied?
Why haven’t their most basic rights to survival been protected?
Why does this brutality continue?
Where are the disappeared victims now?
This work is dedicated to every woman who has suffered from trafficking. Also pay tribute to all those who continue to
speak out and take action.
May more people face this tragedy head-on, so that justice and hope are never ignored again.

THE BLOOD RED CHRONICLE
血红编年史
150 * 90 cm
I have sewn together 200 face masks to create a Chinese national flag. Each mask represents a day and night of the three-year pandemic. The crimson handprints and bloodstains symbolize the blood, tears, and suffering of those who lived, died, or lingered between life and death during this time.
It is the blood and tears of a 16-year-old boy with cerebral palsy who, after his father was forcibly taken into quarantine, was left unattended, ignored by the government, and starved to death at home.
It is the blood and tears of countless puppies and kittens, brutally beaten to death by workers who broke into their owners’ homes under the pretext that “companion animals can also spread the virus.”
It is the blood and tears of patients who needed dialysis during lockdowns but couldn’t leave their homes due to strict policies. Denied admission by hospitals and ignored by authorities, they died alone, uncared for.
It is the blood and tears of those on the Guizhou bus who, due to the zero-COVID policy, were taken to quarantine in the middle of the night, only to die in a tragic accident.
It is the blood and tears of dozens of Uyghurs locked inside their building because of lockdown policies, unable to escape or be rescued, burned alive in the Urumqi Fire.
They cared only about zero-COVID; they did not care about human lives.
I have stitched together all this pain, blood, and tears to create China’s unique Blood-Red Chronicle. This is the true color of this country.

Paper Hands / 紙手
On 26th November, 2024, at two-year anniversary of China’s #WhitePaperProtest, we gradually covered both ourselves and the monument ‘Tegen alle stromen in’ with layers of blank sheets of paper.
Tegen alle stromen in (Counter all currents) is a monument on Leidseplein, Amsterdam, created by artist Rini Hurkmans, in memory of Peter R. De Vries, a dutch crime journalist murdered by gunshot in July 2021. The monument depicts two hands in touch, supporting for each other, carrying Peter R. De Vries’ struggle for people who needed help against injustice.
On the arms of two hands is written in 41 languages, de Vries’ farewell letter to his children: ‘Stay true to yourself... When necessary, stand up for the weak and minorities, speak your mind honestly and listen to your sense of justice. And pass that on to your children. Then all will be well’.
Two years ago on this date, a nation-wide protest broke out in China against the backdrop of 3-year strict zero-COVID policy, marking China’s largest protest since 1989 Tiananmen Massacre. Those blank sheets of paper held by protesters symbolizes not only for Chinese people’s anger towards censorship, but also their solidarity for the suffering of another group of people under the rule of the same regime, the Uyghurs - Two days before the outbreak of the protest, the zero-COVID policy took the lives of 44 Uyghurs during the #ÜrümqiFire. As a consequence, at least hundreds of protesters experienced imprisonment, and some of them still remain unreleased today.
The action of speaking up, seeking justice for those voiceless may bring severe consequences, or even cost the life of the brave ones, no matter the time or place. But why are there always people willing to risk themselves to stand up against injustice for others? Perhaps this is a question that cannot be answered easily by the monument or the blank papers.
