On 26th November, 2024, at two-year anniversary of China’s #WhitePaperProtest, we gradually covered both ourselves and the monument ‘Tegen alle stromen in’ with layers of blank sheets of paper.
Tegen alle stromen in (Counter all currents) is a monument on Leidseplein, Amsterdam, created by artist Rini Hurkmans, in memory of Peter R. De Vries, a dutch crime journalist murdered by gunshot in July 2021. The monument depicts two hands in touch, supporting for each other, carrying Peter R. De Vries’ struggle for people who needed help against injustice.
On the arms of two hands is written in 41 languages, de Vries’ farewell letter to his children: ‘Stay true to yourself... When necessary, stand up for the weak and minorities, speak your mind honestly and listen to your sense of justice. And pass that on to your children. Then all will be well’.
Two years ago on this date, a nation-wide protest broke out in China against the backdrop of 3-year strict zero-COVID policy, marking China’s largest protest since 1989 Tiananmen Massacre. Those blank sheets of paper held by protesters symbolizes not only for Chinese people’s anger towards censorship, but also their solidarity for the suffering of another group of people under the rule of the same regime, the Uyghurs - Two days before the outbreak of the protest, the zero-COVID policy took the lives of 44 Uyghurs during the #ÜrümqiFire. As a consequence, at least hundreds of protesters experienced imprisonment, and some of them still remain unreleased today.
The action of speaking up, seeking justice for those voiceless may bring severe consequences, or even cost the life of the brave ones, no matter the time or place. But why are there always people willing to risk themselves to stand up against injustice for others? Perhaps this is a question that cannot be answered easily by the monument or the blank papers.

Today marks the two-year anniversary of the #WhitePaperProtest in China. Two years ago in Shanghai, I joined this historic movement, being China’s largest nationwide protest since 1989, and was deeply moved by the courage and solidarity displayed by the Chinese people. Ten days later, the Chinese authorities, in an unprecedented move, abandoned their three-year-long zero-COVID policy.
The White Paper Protest occurred not only against the backdrop of China’s draconian three-year zero-COVID policies but also less than two months after #XiJinping crossed term limits and entered indefinite rule. On the streets, people echoed the famous slogans of #PengLifa on Beijing’s #SitongBridge, alongside calls for gender equality, freedom of speech, and artistic and cinematic freedom. In Shanghai, protesters chanted “Down With Xi Jinping, Down With CCP”.
Meanwhile, nearly every major city overseas of China saw for the first time, more than thousands of Chinese people gathering in solidarity with protesters and detainees inside China. Free from censorship, their slogans focused even more sharply on criticizing the ruling Chinese Communist Party and calling for China’s democratization. Following these gatherings, Chinese communities began to emerge in those cities, engaging not only with China’s democratization but also broader issues of human rights and gender equality.
Something particularly significant of the White Paper Protests was the visibility and recognition of #feminist and #LGBTQ protesters. CCP’s suppression of gender-related activism had long been escalating in the past, leaving them with almost no space to operate. Yet during the protests, they took to the streets, bringing the voices of gender equality and LGBTQ+ rights into public spaces, navigating censorship to develop unique forms of resistance.
The significance of this protest extends even further. For the first time, the majority ethnic group in China, Han, protested in solidarity with the suffering of another group—the #Uyghurs. I can remember merely a decade ago, under the influence of state propaganda, people around me still held the belief that Uyghurs and Tibetans were “terrorists.” Now, during these protests largely led by young people, there was a growing understanding that Uyghurs and Tibetans were enduring even greater atrocities. In overseas communities, activists began building connections with Uyghur, Tibetan, and Hong Kong activists through off-line events, incorporating their voices and demands into their own struggles.
Two years ago, I was arrested during the White Paper Protests and placed in solitary confinement for 37 days for my exposing police violence against peaceful protesters. The torture I endured during that time solidified my resolve to take greater action against human rights violations in China.
This year marks my first time being able to commemorate the Ürümqi Fire and White Paper Protest from abroad, after leaving China permanently. But this will not be the last. Chinese human rights activists will continue to fight until the day China is free.
I extend my sincere gratitude to Geneva Summit for its statement regarding the #ÜrümqiFire and #WhitePaperProtest. Once again, I call upon the international community to recognize our voices yearning for human rights and democracy and take action NOW.
Today marks two years since the tragic Ürümqi fire. We mourn the lives lost and honor the brave participants of the #WhitePaperProtest that was ignited in response.
We call for the immediate release of political prisoners who participated in the protests, including Kamile Wayit, Yashar Shohret, Chen Pinlin, and Peng Lifa.

6/ I, too, made political expression during the 2023 Halloween in Shanghai, covering myself in blank papers to honor the #WhitePaperProtest in 2022. I was detained in solitary for almost a month, suffering torture from the police, which ultimately led to my exile from China.

The slogans (see below) were again echoed 1 month later, by protesters during the #WhitePaperProtest in which they demanded to end China’s 3-year covid lockdown. Many think that the #WhitePaperProstest is at least partly motivated and influenced by the #SitongBridge.
Until now, the whereabouts of #PengLifa (#彭立發 or #彭載舟) remain one of the highest secrets of the CCP regime. However, this new incident in Hunan clearly shows that the imagination and yearning for a #DemocraticChina without CCP is something shared by the Chinese people who are just as brave as any people fighting for their own freedom around the world.

(translation of Indictment attached below) Please look at the absurdity of the so-called ‘Indictment’ made against #ChenPinlin, the director facing jail after producing documentary on the #WhitePaperProtest .
Firstly, the #Guobao (secret police) somehow managed to extract Chen’s confession stating that he produced the documentary ‘to seek economic benefits’ and ‘attract traffic from overseas social platforms’, as if they forgot that Chen’s documentary was uploaded OPEN-SOURCED for anyone to use it freely - just as what the Chinese-speaking diaspora have done recently: relay-screening of the documentary for tens of times around the world. Now the question comes: How the hell did #Guobao get this ridiculous confession out of Chen’s mouth?! Through what means?
Secondly, the court accused Chen ‘knowingly fabricated false information’ - are you referring to those videos of protest on Chinese streets? And by saying ‘fabricated’, do you mean they’re staged by some actors in China, where any gathering of more than 3 people could be questioned by street-police and where the density of surveillence cameras is the highest in the world?
Thirdly, the court accused Chen of ‘causing serious disorder in public order’ - do you mean by uploading his documentary onto the platforms where those living in China cannot even access to? And referring to ‘disorder’, how can you shamelessly mention it when your own 3 year zero-covid policy has caused the greatest number of unnatural deaths in China within decades? Who should be accused of causing real disorder?
And lastly, the court accused Chen of ‘damaging the image of the country and seriously endangering national interests’. Let me remind you this: CCP is not China, and don’t you mess up the interest of you, CCP, in continuing brainwashing and kidnapping your own people and spreading your ideology to the rest of the world, with the interest of the Chinese people who just want to live, and live without you.

❕BREAKING: #WhitePaperProtest Director of documentary ‘Not the Foreign Force’, Plato #ChenPinlin photoed in detention center; he has been prosecuted to court.
The case of Chen Pinlin charged of ‘picking quarrels and provoking troubles’ was prosecuted by the Baoshan District Procuratorate of Shanghai to the Baoshan District Court of Shanghai on April 3, 2024.
According to the indictment, Chen Pinlin was born on August 8, 1991, from Xiapu County, Fujian Province. On the evening of November 26, 2022, he used his mobile phone to shoot and save the video footage of the "November 26" (i.e. white paper protest) incident on Urumqi Middle Road in Shanghai. In September 2023, he began to produce the documentary "Not the Foreign Force" (Chinese title: Urumqi Middle Road), a complete review of the first anniversary of the White Paper Movement. The production was completed on November 27 and promoted through multiple overseas platforms, including 210,000 views on Twitter.
On November 28, 2023, Chen Pinlin was arrested in Baoshan District, Shanghai, and was accused of "knowingly spreading fabricated false information on the information network, causing serious disorder in public order; forwarding and quoting insulting remarks of national leaders, damaging the image of the country and seriously endangering national interests."

陈品霖涉嫌寻衅滋事一案已于2024年4月3日由上海市宝山区检察院向上海市宝山区法院提起公诉。
根据起诉书，陈品霖生于1991年8月8日，福建省霞浦县人，于2022年11月26日晚在上海乌鲁木齐中路用手机拍摄并保存“11.26”事件现场视频资料，于2023年9月开始制作《乌鲁木齐中路》白纸运动一周年完整回顾纪录片，于11月27日制作完成，通过多个境外平台推广，其中推特浏览量达21万次。
2023年11月28日，陈品霖在上海宝山区被抓，被指控“明知是编造的虚假信息，在信息网络上散布，造成公共秩序严重混乱；转发引用辱骂国家领导人言论，损害国家形象、严重危害国家利益”。

Wow, @MFA_China: While you are supposedly committed to bettering relations with the U.S., a good faith move would be to release Kamile Wayit, a 19-year-old Uyghur girl detained on 12/12/2022 for reposting a video of the #WhitePaperProtest. On March 25th, she was unjustly sentenced to prison for “Promotion of Extremism”.
