Allama Iqbal in Spain

Sir Muhammad Iqbal was born on 9th of November 1887. He was a poet, thinker and philosopher.

His poetry in Urdu and Persian is considered to be among the greatest of the modern era. His carer started as a nationalist Indian poet. However Hindu-Muslim politics in British India and his visit to Europe influenced his thinking and future poetry. Later he will became a spiritual poet with a vision of an independent state for the Muslims of British India was to inspire the creation of Pakistan.

Below is a collage of photographs shows Iqbal standing under the main arch of the famous mosque of Cordoba (Spain). It is said that Iqbal was the first person who offered prayers after centuries since the mosque was converted into the Church. Following recent colour photograph shows the place where Iqbal stood and prayed during his visit to the mosque. On his return back to British India he penned famous poetry; ‘Hispania’. Few couplets, not full poem are following:

ہسپانیہ تو خونِ مُسلماں کا امیں ہے
مانندِ حرم پاک ہے تو میری نظر میں

پھر تیرے حسینون کو ضرورت ہے حنا کی؟
باقی ہے ابھی رنگ میرے خونِ جگر میں

کیوں کر خسو خاشاک سے دب جائے مُسلماں
مانا وہ تب و تاب نہیں اُس کے شرر میں

Spain! You are the trustee of the Muslim blood:
In my eyes you are sanctified like the Harem.

Is more henna needed by your pretties?
My lifeblood can give them some color!

How can a Muslim be put down by the straw and grass,
Even if his flame has lost its heat and fire!
