For too long, pipelines have been allowed to leak and vent methane. PHMSA has proposed a new rule which will greatly curtail methane emissions from pipelines. Check out our guide to see how you can let @PHMSA_DOT know it’s important to finalize a strong rule
We’ve released a new resource to inform grassroots organizations and members of the public on how they can participate in the comment period for the PHMSA rulemaking, Pipeline Safety: Gas Pipeline Leak Detection and Repair.

🚨#UPDATE: Crews have successfully turned off the gas and lifted the evacuation orders, but they are now asking residents to remain sheltered in place within a 4-mile radius. Video footage suggests that a construction vehicle may have damaged the pipe, leading to the explosion
Shame on any reporter who accepts at face value a gas utility's explanation that a fireball like this was "likely due to a damaged underground cable." https://t.co/IX2CIpHdK1

Five years ago today, a gas gathering pipeline exploded in Midland, Texas that claimed the life of three-year-old Delaney Tercero. At the time, the 10-inch diameter, non-odorized pipeline that killed Delaney was entirely unregulated. 🧵(1/6)
Discussed at the @WhiteHouse Methane Summit what we’re doing @PHMSA_DOT to reduce safety & environmental risks from methane emissions while boosting jobs for pipeline workers & companies that are helping Americans save 💵on energy bills by keeping methane in the pipe! 🇺🇸👷🏻♂️👷🏿♀️👨🔧🔧
This combined with the safety risks highlighted in the @pstrust report means we need to be very careful how hydrogen is deployed #pipelinesafety https://t.co/ywDOEIPNTx
@RJHappel Concerning, yes. But as you probably found out, it's hard to fact check leak rate estimates when operators are not required to report or track their own emissions in many cases. One thing is for sure, emissions are higher than the self-reported numbers given to EPA.
"It takes as little as 0.2 percent of gas to leak to make natural gas as big a driver of climate change as coal, the study found."
I think it's safe to say current infrastructure is leaking much more than 0.2%.
Natural gas has long been seen as a cleaner energy alternative. But if it leaks, even a little, “it’s as bad as coal,” said a researcher and environmental policy expert at Brown University. https://t.co/maxLxdDtZ2
