Today, at the National Stakeholders Conference, we reinforced this message through the #KaaSafeMtaani campaign, now in its second phase.
The statistics are alarming electrical accidents have risen to 153 incidents by June 2024, resulting in 98 fatalities, while petroleum-related accidents, though reduced, remain a serious threat. The tragic Embakasi incident in February 2024 is a painful reminder that we cannot afford complacency. With over 60% of Kenyans lacking sufficient knowledge on the safe handling of LPG, petroleum, and electricity, the need for education and preventive action has never been greater.
To address this challenge, EPRA is spearheading the Coalition for Safety, a national initiative to embed a culture of safety, responsibility, and compliance. Built on four key pillars education, collaboration, enforcement, and public perception changeโthis effort calls upon government agencies, industry players, civil society, and the media to work together in ensuring energy safety for all.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our Chief Guests, Hon. @OpiyoWandayi, CS @EnergyMinK, @official_MLiban (PS, State Department for Petroleum), @AlexKWachira (PS, State Department for Energy), and @DrBKhalwale, for their presence and unwavering commitment to energy safety. Your leadership is instrumental in driving this agenda forward.
As we move ahead, we call upon all stakeholders to integrate this safety message into policies, business operations, and daily practices. Letโs make energy safety a shared responsibility.
