Timing map for this afternoon into the overnight hours for the entirety of Michigan, July 15th & 16th, 2024
Please read carefully, to avoid confusion. First off, the white lines designate the earliest arrival time for the bowing line segments for both the upper and lower peninsula. They will likely be two separate segments. Note that the timing may be off by as much as 60-90 minutes depending on actual start time vs modeled start time. For example, storms could arrive in West Michigan as early as 9:30 or as late as 12:30, but we expect 11 pm to be on target for now. Now to go over the colors you see below.
🟢Greatest Hail Threat🟢
In the dashed green zones are where severe hail is most likely to occur today. We don't expect anything too significant, but a few hail stones upwards of 1.5" could mix in especially with any potent storm in the upper peninsula.
🔵Greatest Wind Threat🔵
A rather large bowing segment will move into the lower peninsula by 11 PM this evening where damaging winds of 60 mph+ are likely, especially given the enhanced risk (level 3 of 5 severity) already in place. Anywhere you see in the blue has a 15-40% chance to see damaging winds within 25 miles of a point. This will be the main hazard we will focus on tonight.
🔴Greatest Tornado Threat🔴
Models and mesoanalysis have picked up on perhaps a sneaky tornado threat for extreme southern upper peninsula, however the chances there will be less than 2%. We figured we'd point it out just in case that segment of storms defies the odds. The main threat for tornadoes will be embedded within our bow-echo that crosses SW Michigan south of a line from Muskegon over to Lansing. A few large clockwise turning hodos among other factors are forecasted ahead of the line as well which could mean in the rare instance we have pop-ups before 11 PM, we could see a brief window where super-cellular mode capable of all hazards exist. This is not the likely solution, but we figured we'd highlight it given that potent environment out in front. The chance for tornadoes within a 25 mile point in southwest Michigan tonight is 2-9%.
⚫️Significant Damaging Wind Threat⚫️
Given the hatched risk from the SPC, we decided to overlay that on our timing map in the dashed black outline you see in SW lower Michigan. Significant winds would be gusts up to or over 70 mph within the bowing segment, leading to widespread power outages across the area and some swaths of tree and crop damage.
We want to make sure you all are prepared, not scared. Remember in the event a severe warning is issued, take shelter on the lowest floor possible and stay away from windows or exterior walls. Basement is best. If you live in a non-sturdy structure, formulate a plan on where to go for sturdier structure before severe weather hits. Bring your important documents, shoes, and pillows or helmets to protect yourselves when you do take shelter, as well as flashlights. Making sure you have a severe weather plan in place puts you miles ahead of everyone else when it comes to being safe when severe weather strikes. We will also be live covering radar with chasers on the ground when any severe warnings are issued both on Facebook and on YouTube! Make sure to share with your friends and family, as this will likely be an overnight threat tonight given the timing below. #miwx
@Charlieleduff R.I.P. Bryan! I'm sorry you had to die the way you did because of our government. I hope that your family gets compensated for the loss of your life. You are gone way too soon. Sending love to Bryan's family and all the people who loved him. All hail the traveler!
@WOODTV When are people going to learn the ones who are doing these mass shootings are not obtaining their firearm legally? So disarm the citizens that follow the law because that makes more sense.
