A 2024 study tested salt, sugar, fish sauce, and rice sold in Philippine wet markets and supermarkets, and found microplastics in all of them.

Even after cooked rice was rinsed three times, PET fibers remained. Based on average Filipino consumption, researchers estimated a person could ingest around 1,788 particles yearly from salt alone, plus hundreds more from sugar and rice combined.

The supply chains behind national “health” stores and your cheapest big box retailer are often the exact same.

Taylor Farms supplies lettuce to places like Taco Bell, Walmart, and Whole Foods simultaneously.

And they control over 57% of the entire chopped salad kit market in America, producing roughly 1 in 3 salads consumed across the US and Canada.

The story goes further than lettuce.

Sprouts Farmers Market, a chain built entirely on the image of small farm sourcing and natural food integrity, confirmed to a customer that Tyson and Perdue supply its private label chicken.

The same Tyson that processes roughly one in every five pounds of all meat sold in the United States.

The same Perdue whose supplier was documented with birds too sick to walk.

Industrial suppliers are often hiding behind the “Farmers Market” label.

The premium you pay at grocers like Whole Foods or Sprouts is not always buying you a different supply chain which is why I’ve permanently switched to buying from local independent farmers in my area on Localize.

A fish long caught in Sarangani Bay and sold in General Santos City's public market, commonly known as “sunogan” in Bisaya or “isdambuwaya” in Tagalog, has been identified as an entirely new species.

Researchers examined 18 flathead fish specimens and initially believed they belonged to the known species 𝘌𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘴 𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘴𝘰𝘯𝘯𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘪𝘪.

The newly described fish has been named 𝙀𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙨 𝙨𝙖𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙖𝙣𝙞𝙚𝙣𝙨𝙞𝙨, or the Sarangani flathead, after the bay where it was discovered. The fish has long been part of everyday meals.

The Sarangani flathead looks similar to its closest relative but has noticeably larger eyes, different tooth patterns, unique scales, transparent dorsal fins, no tail filament, and distinct internal features. DNA analysis also confirmed it is a completely separate species.

The finding highlights how species familiar to local communities may remain scientifically undocumented, emphasizing the importance of biodiversity research and conservation in the Philippines. #GenSan #fish #biodiversity
