It's Whitsun, Pentecost, the summer festival when the Holy Spirit descends with fire. In this Anglo-Saxon image the flames touch the lips of each apostle, and even the sky has turned fiery red.

Unbelievably, a new version of Cædmon’s hymn has just been found in Rome, dating to the beginning of the 9th century (less than 100 yrs after the Eccl. History was first written).

It’s probably the third-oldest version we have, and the oldest which includes a different reading in line 5b, coming out in West Saxon as “eorðan bearnum”. Most scholars thought this was a late variant, but now we know it was very, very early!
