🧵 4/5: One of the biggest misconceptions about simple passing football is that it is slow or passive. In reality, short, sharp triangles are the quickest way to destabilise a defence.

A long ball often just gives the opponent time to reset. A dribble can beat one man but still run into a second or third.

But a series of quick one-twos shifts the entire defensive unit, creates overloads on one side, and then opens space on the other.

Manchester City have built years of success on exactly this idea. Arsenal now do the same. When Carrick’s United embraced it, they looked like a team that knew exactly what it was doing.

That is why the Hull setback should not trigger panic or radical change. Radical change is what creates confusion.

It makes players think too much and move too little. The answer is simplification: demand angles, demand movement, demand one-touch passes where possible. If United return to those little triangles, they will become hard to press and hard to mark again.

The video evidence is clear. Last season’s performances showed what this group can do when it keeps the game simple.

The Hull loss should be a reminder, not a crisis. Go back to the rondos, trust the basics, and start running circles around the opposition again.

It also behoves us to ask, why Joshua Zirkzee is benched. Here is a player who has more in his tool bag, than meets the eye. The game vs Hull, was the perfect game to sub Bruno, (great player but having an off day) with the instinctive Zirkzee. The game needed his no look instinctive forward passes and precise little touches, one two wall passes and diagonal/through balls.

It was the same as Casemiro last season, when he was written off long before his "Use-by" Date, by virtually EVERY PUNDIT, from Jamie Caragher, Craig Burley, Gary Neville, Paul Scholes, et al!

People tend to regard pundits, all football greats as founts of football wisdom? The fact that they're ALL RESOUNDING FLOPS in football management offers a clue. They play the game instinctively, and are completely hopeless in football manager and as talking heads on TV! Take Maradona. Arguably a GOAT, but couldn't manage if his life depends on it! He's even worse as a Talking Head!

I like his physicality too with a strong frame and robust duel-handling. It makes him difficult to shrug off the ball or out-muscle in 1v1 situations.

Zirkzee showed in the 5-0 friendly drubbing of Rosenberg flashes of pure Paul Scholes at his best...his passes are slide rule Scholesque...are we missing something? Could Zirkzee be another attacking midfielder, like Scholes? SAF converted Scholes from a so so striker to the World's best AM. He spent the first decade of his career primarily as an attacking midfielder and second striker, before later transitioning into a deep-lying playmaker. He excelled in advanced areas with his slide-rule passes, through his late runs into the box, lethal goalscoring, and technical brilliance.Just like Casemiro, there could be a talent, widely panned by critics, but a hidden gem waiting to be discovered! Remember, all those who panned Casemiro are now unanimous in their admission that they were wrong!

The De Beers model of artificial scarcity and manufactured prestige works only as long as buyers remain ignorant. The United Board and United fans are no longer ignorant. The football world's inflated valuations are crumbling, and those who pivot quickly - as INEOS appears to be doing - will emerge as the market's true victors.

Many a good United player's career had been ruined by the pundits.
