A king had put a price on his head, and a Catholic assassin came to collect it.

When Balthasar fired his pistol he committed the first head-of-state assassination by handgun in history, and the regicide he carried out would echo through Dutch memory for centuries.

🔷 Philip II of Spain had grown tired of the rebel prince who kept his empire from sleeping easy. In 1580 he issued a Ban declaring William of Orange an outlaw, offering 25,000 crowns, land, and a title of nobility to any man who killed him. It was a king's ransom placed on a single head.

🔷 Balthasar Gérard, a young Frenchman from the Franche-Comté, had carried the idea of that killing inside him for years. Devout, disciplined, and utterly convinced of his cause, he began building the disguise of a life around a single act. He presented himself as a poor Calvinist refugee, the son of a Protestant martyr, and let that story open doors that would otherwise have stayed shut.

🔷 Over months he worked his way into William's confidence at the Prinsenhof in Delft, carrying messages, running errands, becoming a familiar and trusted face. He even accepted money from William to buy new clothes and used it instead to buy the pistols that would kill him.

🔷 On 10 July 1584, William came down the stairs of the Prinsenhof after lunch. Gérard stepped from the shadow of a stone archway and fired at close range. William collapsed on the steps and was dead within minutes, his last breath spent on an appeal to God and to the people he had spent sixteen years defending.

🔷 Gérard did not run but was seized by the household within moments and handed to a city in shock and fury. His execution stretched across days, one of the cruelest (I’ll spare you the details) of an age that had no shortage of cruelty, and by most accounts he met it without ever renouncing what he believed he had done for God and king.

🔷 The rebellion did not die with William. His son Maurice carried the war forward to a settlement Spain could never undo, and the Dutch remembered William as Vader des Vaderlands, Father of the Fatherland.

🔷Under Maurice, the Dutch army became a model that other European powers studied and copied. The war ground on for decades after William's death, through the Twelve Years' Truce in 1609 and on to the Peace of Westphalia in 1648, when Spain finally recognized Dutch independence outright.

If you are ever around, I recommend you visit the location where it all went down. The Prinsenhof still stands, and the bullet holes are still there in the stairwell wall.

A small, dark scar left by the afternoon a single shot changed the fate of a nation still being born.
