The fact that Dementors were apparently the LEAST horrifying thing found inside Azkaban is something I still think about.

Azkaban wasn’t even built as a prison. It was originally occupied by a dark wizard called Ekrizdis, who hid the island from the world and lured Muggle sailors there to perform horrific magical experiments on them.

When Ekrizdis died, the concealment charms disappeared and the Ministry finally discovered the island.

And according to the extended lore, what the investigators found inside was so horrifying that they refused to talk about it. They wouldn’t write it down or even discuss what they had seen.

The only thing they were willing to mention was the least disturbing discovery:

The Dementors.

Soul-sucking, joy-eating creatures that are basically embodiments of despair.

And THAT was the least horrifying thing they found.

So what the hell was Ekrizdis actually doing in there?

Was he creating magical objects? Experimenting on other creatures? Trying to create something even worse?

But the biggest question for me is the Dementors.

Ekrizdis supposedly lured Muggle sailors to the island and experimented on them, and the first Dementors in recorded history were found in that exact place.

So were Dementors originally human?

Did Ekrizdis torture and twist those sailors until there was nothing human left?

Because if that’s what happened, the origin of the Dementors is even darker than we were ever told.
