Delighted to hear Great Yellow Bumblebee mentioned in passing today on @RyanTubridyShow by Dr. Aidan O'Hanlon, curator of entomology @DublinDeadZoo Natural history museum @NMIreland
Check out Dr O'Hanlon's fascinating chat about insects with Ryan here

Who knows..we might find the great yellow bumblebee on Muighinis one day? Ideal conditions..machair, small stony field packed with wildflowers I'm listening to Mooney Goes Wild from Monday 11 April on RTÉ Radio 1 https://t.co/vTCu6tWcVh
A quick 1 minute treatment with oxalic acid dribbling in late Dec but still mild, 9C. Second varroa treatment this year as formic acid strips in Aug. All colonies alive but needed fresh fondant. Will need a new windbreak! #varroa#AMM#nativeblackbee
Can we just please ‘park’ this study? Any outcome or findings based on a survey of 50 people is dubious and flawed. United Ireland would grant unionists ‘significant’ opportunities in coalitions

@Im_thefarmer Fantastic, presume for nitrogen fixation but if you let a border area flower, that mix would be incredible for pollinators such as my honeybees! Didn’t know buckwheat/ borage were nitrogen fixative but all the legume/pea family are.
The marketing authorisation holder for MAQS, an important varroa treatment for honeybees, is NOD Apiary Ireland based in Dublin 2…why did I have to import through the UK with an extra 25% cost due to #Brexit ? #varroa#honeybees@NodApiary@FIBKA_IE@agriculture_ie
@NodApiary@TheHPRA@FIBKA_IE So what do we do for this season? Bit of a disaster. I exclusively use formic acid after the main harvest..which is right now. Is it possible to order from an EU distributor in the meantime?? #bees#varroa
@illonaduffy@todowd@HSELive @DonnellyStephen @ICGPnews Agree Illona, the waiting list for cataract surgery in NI is over 2 years so these referrals are straight to NI private hospitals like our NTPF initiative…this will never fix underresourced public system. Understandable though for frustrated patients
A beautiful wildflower meadow surrounded by a forest of native trees in rural Wexford…birds foot trefoil, white clover, rosebay willowherb, bramble. A feast for #bees#pollinators#biodiversity
Rosebay willowherb (Chamerion angustifolium, family Onagraceae) is a bee important wildflower that produces a pale white honey and blue pollen. A good example of protandry to prevent self- fertilisation where younger distal flowers have ripe anthers but unreceptive stigma #bees
Meet the beekeepers on Muighinis! A timely first inspection delayed by Covid but just prevented swarming. First find and isolate the queen in a clip cage, then carefully look for queen cells. Lots there, a couple sealed but also open charged queen cells..some even just an egg!
