Doubts don’t have to lead to deconstruction. Parents, here are five ways to guide your kids through tough questions:

1. Don’t panic. Doubts are normal.
When your child expresses doubt about their faith, your first instinct might be fear or frustration. Take a deep breath. Doubt is often the starting point for deeper growth. Instead of reacting emotionally, view it as an opportunity to walk with your child toward truth.

2. Thank them for trusting you. Celebrate their openness.
If your child shares their doubts, it means they trust you. Thank them for being honest and brave enough to express their struggles. A simple “thank you for telling me” can set the tone for a safe and supportive conversation.

3. Listen first. Understand their questions and struggles.
Before pointing them to answers, take the time to truly listen. Ask open-ended questions like, “What’s been bothering you about this?” or “How did you come to this conclusion?” Listening shows respect and builds trust, giving you insight into how to guide them.

4. Take time to tackle the topics. Don’t bombard them with truth at every contact.
Instead of overwhelming your child with answers immediately, agree to set aside dedicated time to explore their questions together. Choose trusted, biblically sound resources, and walk through them as a team. This approach shows your willingness to engage thoughtfully while respecting their pace.

5. Model Christ’s love. Actions speak louder than words.
Your kids are watching how you live out your faith. Be patient, kind, and authentic in your walk with Christ. Demonstrate how faith shapes your decisions and brings peace. Sometimes, what you do will impact them far more than what you say.
