@HoboStew Just a guess, but perhaps it's a just a component of the velocity, hence three values, one for each component, but each is signed and thus together they carry capture the vector quantity itself. Presumably the z-component caused the problem?

@dphilz Interesting. Every UK school I've worked at or visited has technicians. Pretty sure there's a US teacher somewhere who is throwing the coffee mug in with the glassware so the original point probably still stands after suitable amendment to reflect who cleans the glassware.

@edmunds_dr Or to speak more carefully, the resultant force is the planet pull "weight". In order to have a non-zero resultant force but not get closer to the centre, you need to be in circular motion at a given speed (given your radial distance from centre) /end
