@Rongwrong_ The topic of function or purpose or plan in evolutionary biology is challenging! But isn't it pervasive in, for example, medicine? An individual's heart or eye is not "functioning" as it is "supposed" to. It is not a problem unique to reproductive biology.

@Rongwrong_ @briandavidearp I think in the case of human babies, the "plan" is due to their gonads having differentiated into testes or ova, and the typical downstream consequences of that. It is compatible with an individual not producing sperm in the future.
