Illinois news anchor Dave Benton sat at his desk, looked into the camera, and told his viewers he only had months to live.

He did not frame it as a news item.

He framed it as something shared between family.

"We've got some family business to discuss... that's why we're sitting here. And because all of you are part of our family... we wanted to let you know what's been going on behind the scenes."

Then he told them plainly what the doctors had told him:

"As I told you a few weeks ago, my brain cancer is back. But now I've learned more about what the future holds. This new tumor is too big for surgery and radiation. I've decided to do an antibody treatment and some chemo to try and slow its growth. That's my best option."

He did not soften the timeline.

"That being said... doctors tell me I have anywhere from four to six months before things turn bad."

Most people, given that prognosis, would step away. Dave decided the opposite:

"I'm dedicated to keep working. I will be here bringing you the news as long as I am able."

Sitting beside him, co-anchor Jennifer Roscoe marked a quiet milestone that made the moment land even harder.

"You've been here for years, in fact your 10th year starts in a few weeks."

Dave answered the way a man does when he is already looking back on a life's work:

"It has been a pleasure to work here. These 10 years I hope I've been dedicated to doing good work and important stories. I hope to look back at some point and I hope to have served you well."

What stayed with people was not fear. It was peace.

A born-again Christian, Dave told viewers where his calm came from:

"I believe that I'm in God's hands, I'm at peace and I know he will take care of the days ahead."

He kept his word.

He stayed at the anchor desk for months after that broadcast, stepping down only in April 2015 when the tumor finally made it too hard to read the news.

He passed away on May 26, 2015, at 52.
