@brintdavy@JackCraver@KirkPWatson@APDChiefDavis@AustinJustice Lol the Constitution isn’t a flawed premise. Most mentally ill poor ppl have misdems and can’t be held forever just on crim history or mental health needs. TX law and due process limit pretrial detention. Public safety requires treatment, not a cycle of jail releases w/o services
@JosieBedlam@JackCraver@KirkPWatson@APDChiefDavis If voluntary inpatient treatment for psych/rehab existed, ppl would go. I see it every day. When we have resources people take advantage! It is so difficult to find a psych facility to take a person for a few days, let alone a week+. And rehab - have you tried OSAR? Fuckin joke.
@brintdavy@JackCraver@KirkPWatson@APDChiefDavis Jail isn't a hospital or a fix for housing. Cycling ppl w serious mental illness through jail without treatment doesn’t improve public safety in the long run. They get petty crimes. What happens when they serve their sentence? Constitution says they can't stay in jail forever.
@Elizabeth_TX1@JackCraver@KirkPWatson@APDChiefDavis What services??? People on ATX streets want rehab and mental health services but they are impossible to access without multiple caseworkers and $. After 3 yrs working in this industry, for every 100 homeless ppl in ATX I work with, MAYBE five or so don't want help
@RJefferies5078@JackCraver@KirkPWatson@APDChiefDavis What hospitals?? Austin state hospital waitlist is years long. Austin oaks, Georgetown behavioral, cross creek-- those places won't keep ppl more than 2 weeks! Non violent crimes can only keep ppl in jail for so long... there is no where for these people to go!!!
@FedupCitiz9n@ATXVideos TDCJ sends them here after they're out of prison to go to Austin Transitional Center. Unless ATC closes the problem is gonna keep getting worse.
