Research is a field that depends heavily on both talent and discipline. Hard work alone does not guarantee great results: months of diligent effort can sometimes be outweighed by a single moment of genuine insight.
At the same time, research is also extraordinarily rigorous: even the best ideas must be carefully refined, thoroughly tested, and repeatedly validated.
In the end, great research comes from the rare combination of creativity, intuition, patience, and persistence.
To every first and second year PhD student who just completed their year 1/2 and are quietly wondering if they actually “belong here,” this is for you.
Impostor syndrome is real, and it is especially loud in top research and elite institutions. You are sitting in seminars at a top ranked university, surrounded by people who seem to speak the language of academia effortlessly, and somewhere in the back of your mind a voice keeps whispering that you somehow slipped through the cracks.
YOU DID NOT!
You met every requirement. You were admitted because the people who read your file believed you had something worth developing. Accepting you was a decision the institution made to invest in your future. It wasn’t charity.
And yes, the transition from practitioner to scholar is disorienting. Yes, the readings are dense. Yes, articulating your own ideas in academic language, especially when those ideas challenge the norms of your field, is genuinely hard. That difficulty is not evidence that you do not belong. It is evidence that you are doing the actual work of becoming a scholar.
Do not let anyone reduce your presence to a QUOTA. Not because you are a woman. Not because you are a person of color. Not because you are an international student. Your perspective is not a checkbox. It is a contribution. And the academy needs it, whether it always knows that or not.
I have seen colleagues tape notes to their cubicle walls. “I belong here.” “I am enough.” And I understand why. Sometimes you have to say it to yourself before you believe it.
So let me say it clearly: follow your curiosity. Trust your instincts. Even if your ideas feel transgressive or unconventional or too different from how everyone else is framing things, do not shrink them. That is often exactly where the most important scholarship lives.
You belong in that program. You deserve to be there. Go into the summer and next fall believing you belong here, and let your light shine.
The idea that your life will just fall into place or everything will work itself out is a huge psyop. You need to aggressively pursue your goals with every ounce of energy you have. You don’t get what you deserve in life, only what you negotiate.

This was just a dream, a dream I didn’t even know was possible—but I decided to pursue it anyway. Today, that dream is now a reality. We have a desktop app (Windows and macOS—this weekend) that can do all of this and even more. Over the last six months, I’ve pushed myself and my team hard, and I’ve seen people become hopeful and genuinely blessed by this product. I’ve received strong support from pastors, church members, techies, and several media houses and reporters. It has been a great honor to spend myself on something worthwhile.
We’ve built an AI-native presentation app that displays relevant scriptures on screen in under 80 ms, without needing a volunteer. We’re starting with scriptures, but we’re growing into a comprehensive presentation software, with slides launching next month.
From testing @pewbeam_ai in churches over the last four weeks, pastors have been able to focus on what matters instead of juggling or micromanaging the media team while preaching. Church members have been able to follow their pastor’s references in real time and take better notes. In the words of a member from one of the test churches: “Pewbeam changed the way I follow sermons in church completely.” This is the kind of impact I see Pewbeam having on people’s faith and on how church and worship are done.
Pewbeam’s mission is to ensure the Church is not left behind in the AI era. We’re starting with this application, with many more to come in the next few months. We’ll keep working with stakeholders in the Christian faith, collect feedback, and build tools that better support discipleship. And unlike previous waves of technology, I believe we can be among the first movers in this AI revolution.
With all that said, the final build of the app is ready, and we’re launching for public download on February 25, 2026. The app has a generous free tier for small churches and fellowships, and a paid plan (location-based pricing) that unlocks unlimited access to all features.

Back in the days, almost everyone did coding where you relied on experience, Google search, Stack Overflow, GitHub gist, and many other sources to assist in your functionality coding.

These days, almost everyone does vibe coding—using AI-assisted coding tools such as WindSurf IDE, Claude 3.5/3.7 Sonnet, JetBrain AI assistant in JetBrain IDEs, cursor AI, Lovable, Bolt etc to write almost 90% if not all of the code.
☑️ Intentional Coding
I was thinking about this over the midnight due to my current work on some Java projects.
Of course, I leverage AI assistant tools in writing code, but almost all of my coding decisions are highly and carefully curated. From clean coding and clean architecture considerations up to carefully using modern Java features such as lambda, Streams API, Optional, records, etc. I basically optimize my prompts for all these features.
Then I carefully consider various cache eviction policies for database computations(in my current work ClickHouse database) I’m caching and thread pool scheduling of cache invalidation.
What got me to write this post was two computations I needed to run on some Kafka event types—more like a reactive programming. I initially separated the two methods and ran them sequentially based on the event type in my kafka consumer listener templates—processing from multiple topics.
But I kept thinking when I woke up to pee: “that piece of code can benefit from Java virtual threads, right?” It doesn’t really have to be sequential since each operation doesn’t depend on each other’s results and can benefit from concurrency, hence removing processing bottlenecks? Inspired by how I can do this pretty easily in Golang goroutines.
This is what birthed what I coined “intentional coding”—where all decisions about every aspect of the coding are highly intentional. From data type selection to reduce memory usage to various areas of the code optimisations to avoid memory leak, gain performance improvements and improve application security.
Vibe coding might be popular now, but intentional coding is quite rare as many people now put coding on autopilot.

After a week of AI-assisted JavaScript programming, I started feeling a bit confused about AI's capabilities. Although I couldn’t find any papers specifically on this topic, I came across a high-quality blog that basically cleared up my confusion.
