How would you assess the public opinion/support for the plant in Limerick itself?
Another problem is that journalists can interview 50 people and only publish the juicy ones.
Another irritation I have is when the full interview is not published.
That said, I think the Irish state and local politicians are influenced by Russian money
@DaddyPobbin@abrahamson_ed@CaolanReports On principle I strongly agree that journalists should not use wacky fringe characters to misrepresent the political consensus or public opinion
@SITARMS@CaolanReports@WalleyVision A competent former army Lt Col should know the world and journalism is a bit more complicated than your binary questions.
You sound like a teenager who did the first semester of a Chomsky course.
@DaddyPobbin@abrahamson_ed@CaolanReports So your suggestion is to ignore right wing Israeli politicians and Irish politicians who are complicit in the Russian War effort?
I agree that journalism should provide a nuanced picture, but this interview was done in a responsible way, the view of local councillors are relevant
Fair point, I support Ukraine while not being a fan of Europe taking millions of Ukrainian refugees.
It in the long term it is damaging the future of Ukraine.
Europe should have helped Ukrainians to settle in western Ukraine with some level of protection.
The same with Syria who lost an awful lot of qualified people - leaving a country that cannot recover.
@ShaunPinnerUA I think the attack on St Petersburg on Wednesday will be psychologically significant
I am amazed that Ukraine managed to pull this off while Russian defences must have been on high alert
After omicron was identified I watched an interview with an expert in Johannesburg who highlighted the mild symptoms.
I then told my German colleagues that the new German policy should be offer free holidays to South Africans, and when they arrive at Frankfurt - every German should hug them.
Nope.
There is a huge difference in saying a Russian victory is likely vs Russia will definitely win in the first months.
The more sophisticated analysts did not make absolute predictions and were not retards, they underestimated Russian poor tactics.
What is your prediction now?
The poster correctly pointed to the fact that external analysis should not be dismissed out of hand.
But your counter argument is valid as well.
Ultimately it depends on the ability of the analysist to be objective and having a good understanding of multiple disciplines.
Another point is that living amongst a certain group of people can compromise or cloud your judgement.
Living among protestants in Belfast (on a daily basis) during the 70s would not necessarily lead to a deep understanding of the "troubles".
If you make an effort to engage both sides, then direct experience per your point is invaluable.
However most "direct experience" accounts in conflicts are when the observer is embedded on one side - not objective at all.
