बनिया समुदाय को अक्सर भीरु, शांतिप्रिय और कंजूस समझा जाता है, लेकिन इतिहास में इसके विपरीत कई उदाहरण मिलते हैं।

भारत में प्रिंटिंग प्रेस पुर्तगाली लाए थे और सोलहवीं सदी तक भारत में केवल एक प्रेस थी, जिसमें बाइबिल छपती थी।

यह देखकर सूरत के मशहूर सेठ और महाजन श्री भीमजी पारेख ने ईस्ट इंडिया कंपनी के जरिए प्रिंटिंग प्रेस मंगवाई, ताकि देवनागरी में हिंदी-गुजराती की धार्मिक पुस्तकें छापी जा सकें।

उन्होंने एक अंग्रेज़ को 50 पाउंड वेतन पर इस काम के लिए रखा। आज उन्हें भारत में प्रिंटिंग प्रेस का जनक माना जाता है।

लेकिन यह कहानी उनके व्यापारिक या धार्मिक कार्यों की नहीं है।

1669 में औरंगज़ेब के मंदिर-विध्वंस संबंधी फ़रमान सूरत पहुँचे। शहर क़ाज़ी ने मंदिर तुड़वाने और धर्म परिवर्तन करवाने शुरू किए। इसी दौरान सेठ भीमजी पारेख के भतीजे का जबरन ख़तना कर उसे दीनी बना दिया गया।

इसके जवाब में सेठ जी सूरत के लगभग 8,000 महाजन-व्यापारियों को सपरिवार लेकर पलायन कर गए और बंबई जा बसे। सूरत, जहाँ अंग्रेज़, डच और मुग़ल सभी व्यापार करते थे, वहाँ का बाज़ार ठप्प पड़ गया।

जब यह खबर आगरा पहुँची तो औरंगज़ेब ने फ़रमान जारी कर सेठ भीमजी पारेख से क्षमा माँगी और आश्वासन दिया कि सूरत में न किसी बनिये का धर्म बदला जाएगा, न मंदिर तोड़े जाएँगे।

इतिहास में मुग़ल बादशाह को घुटनों पर लाने वाले सेठ जी को भले कम लोग याद रखते हों, लेकिन यह घटना बताती है कि मध्यकाल में यदि किसी जाति का लगभग न के बराबर धर्म परिवर्तन हुआ, तो वह बनिया समुदाय था।
