Jackie, the beloved Big Bear bald eagle, has passed away.

Early this morning, August 10, 2026, Jackie—the iconic bald eagle whose nest with mate Shadow captivated millions worldwide through the Friends of Big Bear Valley livestream—died after more than three weeks of intensive care at the Ojai Raptor Center.

Rescued in mid-July after being found weak and grounded near Big Bear Lake following a confrontation with younger eagles, Jackie was battling severe anemia and an underlying illness that veterinarians could not fully diagnose despite exhaustive efforts, including a blood transfusion, oxygen therapy, advanced imaging, and round-the-clock monitoring.

She was about 14 years old and leaves behind Shadow and the eaglets they raised together over the years, including recent fledglings Sandy and Luna.
Jackie wasn’t just a bird on a camera—she was a symbol of wild California, a devoted parent, and a quiet force that brought people together across the globe. Her strength, resilience, and the simple beauty of watching her and Shadow build a life in the San Bernardino Mountains touched countless hearts.

The team at Ojai Raptor Center and everyone who followed her journey are heartbroken. Thank you to the rescuers, veterinarians, and the community that supported her every step of the way.

Rest easy, Jackie. You soared higher than most of us ever will. 🇺🇸 🦅
