Aang learned waterbending because it was his duty as the Avatar. Katara learned waterbending because it was her identity, her legacy, and her survival.
Y'all hype up Toph’s metalbending like it’s an ultimate power, but Adult Katara literally counters her entire existence. One move to freeze the floor into ice, and the 'greatest earthbender in the world' is instantly blind and completely helpless. Toph doesn't stand a chance. 😭💀

Fact check: Katara never actually surpassed Aang in waterbending. People confuse her learning a few ice tricks with raw power.
Aang fused with the Ocean Spirit to wipe out an entire Fire Nation armada in Book 1 while Katara was struggling with basic grunts.
The Avatar was always leagues ahead. 🌊
@Andihar01629747 Exactly... that lightning redirection was the defining moment. Aang had Ozai dead to rights and intentionally spared him. He wasn't just trying to beat Ozai; he was trying to win without sacrificing his core identity.
Aang was losing badly.
Then the Avatar State took over.
Was Aang actually stronger than Ozai, or did the Avatar State simply give him an overwhelming advantage?
@blkhalchemist That rock sphere was literally Aang's panic room! He went from full defense mode to absolute final boss the second that rock unblocked his chi path.
@Octavio614473 Fair point. Sozin's Comet gave Ozai peak firebending power, and a 12-year-old who only had months to learn three new elements was naturally at a raw experience disadvantage. The Avatar State tapped into thousands of years of combined mastery to completely flip the script.
@preachypat Spot on about his upbringing. Aang wasn't fighting with lethal intent because his Air Nomad principles meant more to him than winning through bloodshed. The Avatar State didn't just give him raw power; it temporarily bypassed that moral hesitation.
Toph's blindness made her a better earthbender…
but it also created one of the most exploitable weaknesses in her fighting style.
Take away the ground. What does Toph do?🤷
