@apothiasexual Hours with a neurotypical therapist trying to uncover what trauma or maladaptive thinking was causing my autistic burnout. I'm sorry, there really is no trauma. Everything is just very loud and bright and people keep talking or trying to make me participate in society.
One thing I’ve learned while interviewing autistic adults is the reason why some autistic kids grow up to seem “less autistic” is bc as adults they have more autonomy over their environment & modify it to be more accommodating. This leads to better regulation. 🧵
@fizleglitz yep! differing definitions have definitely been an unexpected hurdle for me
had a similar misunderstanding with SPD:
ppl wear sunglasses = sun hurts everyone's eyes
Nope! apparently not everyone gets shooting pain!
seems odd how long we can go with differing ideas about stuff
@fizleglitz right i totally get you. i also relate to a lot of ADHD stories, but every time i re-investigate the criteria i can tell it's just not me. i've just decided that psych is still evolving, so maybe in the future ADHD/autism may be recategorized, so i'm not going to worry about it
@Katamabob@AmberlynWhite i'm sensing a theme here.
pls check out Untamed (or Mo Dao Zu Shi) if you haven't already. main couple are adhd/autistic coded
@AutisticCallum_ when i was still learning about my autism my mom told me she really liked the show we were watching together (while i was lukewarm on it) so in a effort to bond over it i went all-in on the research & oh boy was that not appreciated!
i thought: that's how to enjoy things though?
@hmm_cook stumbled upon a tweet awhile back that recommended potassium and magnesium supplements to help with SPD. i tried it out and it has personally helped me a lot
i totally agree that SPD sucks, so i'd love to see some actual research put into this
@kit1049@AmberlynWhite This! i can get where NTs are coming from on most things. BUT THIS!!
i've literally had someone ask "where are you from?" & visibly lose interest before I got 2 words in
Yo! i've not had time to be boring! why'd you even ask?? why are we going thru this script if we don't care???
@sliceybr3ad your sodium might be low, have a bit of salt. also recommended to fast with mineral water and electrolyte supplements (potassium and magnesium).
I was actually thinking something similar to this the other day!
My effort to appear NT generally amounts to sacrificing accuracy of information in favor of speed.
One of my issues with small talk is that it often requires quick recall of "irrelevant" details.
- Allistic vs. Autistic brain wiring explained via iconographic recognition to explain the trade off between Allistic heuristic governor & Autistic pattern recognition. -
TLDR:
- Allistics brains are wired for "quick & dirty"
- Autistic brains are wired for "slow & precise"
By the time I've accurately recalled where I went to lunch yesterday and have a response, a weird amount of time has passed & NTs start to get a bit twitchy.
So I speed up.
My brain says: you've been to Golden Wok recently. Was that it?
So I say "Yeah, I went to Golden Wok."
Sorry I can't answer "easy" questions properly, but my brain is overheating. I am NOT assigning resources to cataloguing all possible small talk topics.
