Meryl aceptó interpretar a Donna aunque su agente le recomendó rechazar el papel. Ella estaba segura de que la gente amaría la película.

Cuando se estrenó en 2008, las críticas fueron despiadadas. Se burlaron de la dirección, de las voces y de una historia considerada demasiado cursi.

El público respondió bailando en las salas.

Con un presupuesto de 52 millones, "Mamma Mia!" recaudó más de 611 millones de dólares. Algunos cines que atravesaban dificultades lograron mantenerse abiertos gracias a las personas que regresaban a verla.

But all 1,643 children survived.
