آقای رئیس‌جمهور، از پنجره بیرون را ببینید. به پارک لافایت نگاه کنید. به چهار گوشه‌اش نگاه کنید. آنجا مجسمه‌های لافایت، روشمبو، کوشیوشکو و فون اشتوبن را می‌بینید؛ دو فرانسوی، یک میهن‌دوست لهستانی و یک افسر پروسی. فرماندهان خارجی‌ای که کشور‌هایشان به جورج واشنگتن و یک ارتش انقلابیِ پراکنده و کم‌امکانات کمک کردند تا قدرتمندترین امپراتوری جهان را شکست دهد.

این داستان تولد آمریکاست. انقلابی علیه استبداد که فقط به این دلیل زنده ماند که دیگران به کمکش آمدند. آن زمان در این کمک گرفتن هیچ شرمی نبود، امروز هم نیست.

حالا به مرکز پارک نگاه کنید. مجسمه اندرو جکسون را می‌بینید؛ نه رئیس‌جمهور جکسون، بلکه ژنرال جکسون، مردی که در نیواورلئان با بریتانیایی‌ها جنگید. با این حال، آمریکا جنگ ۱۸۱۲ را باخت. کاخ سفید به آتش کشیده شد. جمهوری نوپا تا آستانه فروپاشی پیش رفت. این کشور جوان تقریباً از تاریخ محو می‌شد، چون در آن لحظه تنها مانده بود و کسی به کمکش نیامد.

وقتی رژیم ای��ان می‌گوید می‌خواهد «مذاکره» کند، این دیپلماسی نیست، وقت‌کشی است. حکومت‌های استبدادی مذاکره می‌کنند تا زمان بخرند، تا خودشان را جمع‌وجور کنند، معترضان را شناسایی کنند و کار را تمام کنند. اگر این رژیم از این لحظه جان سالم به در ببرد، نتیجه‌اش ثبات نخواهد بود، بلکه حمام خونی است که قدرتشان را برای همیشه تثبیت می‌کند.

آمریکا هرگز در نبردهای بزرگ اخلاقی تاریخ بی‌طرف نبوده است. آزادی اروپا پس از جنگ جهانی دوم، بخش‌های بزرگی از آسیا که از امپریالیسم و توتالیتاریسم رها شدند، آزادسازی کویت از اشغال، ایستادن مقابل نسل‌کشی در بوسنی و کوزوو. بله، اشتباهاتی هم ب��ده است. اما ایران متفاوت است. اینجا مردمی هستند که آشکارا خواهان پایان یک رژیم سرکوبگرند، زیر گلوله، در برابر چشم جهان.

شما یک فرصت تاریخی در اختیار دارید. اگر به مردم ایران امید بدهید و بعد با معامله و تردید، جلادانشان را مشروعیت ببخشید، تاریخ شما را نخواهد بخشید. به پارک لافایت نگاه کنید. آمریکا می‌داند وقتی مردم آزاد رها می‌شوند چه اتفاقی می‌افتد، و می‌داند وقتی متحدان در لحظه‌ی سرنوشت‌ساز قدم جلو می‌گذارند، چه می‌شود.
