He used his house deposit savings for an experience that no amount of money could replace. A final World Cup adventure with his grandad.

Jacob Allmendinger a 21 year old England supporter from East Yorkshire had set aside 10000 pounds toward his first home. Instead of using those funds for a deposit he chose to take his 80 year old grandfather Geoff Golliker to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

For Jacob the decision felt straightforward. He explained that he could always earn the money again. This opportunity to share the World Cup with his grandad however might never come again.

Since Jacobs grandmother passed away in 2020 football had strengthened their connection. Their relationship goes beyond typical grandparent and grandchild. They are close friends.

The pair traveled together across North America following the England team and building memories that no property savings or financial gain could match.

In the end the most valuable choices often favor experiences and relationships over material possessions.

So we’re concreting over 850 acres of countryside with Britain’s biggest AI data centre. (Concrete being one of the key materials we’re told is carbon intensive and destroying the climate)

It will need about 1.5GW of electricity (about 3% of the UK’s peak demand), and with vast amounts of rainwater that would ordinarily fall on agricultural land and serve rivers and reservoirs. (I thought we had a water shortage?)

And don’t talk about jobs haha, these are short term construction, after that these sheds are mostly automated.

So what we’re basically saying is that existential climate change isn’t as important as the infrastructure required to control us … interesting priorities. Got it!

My dad has bees. Today, when I visited him, he showed me the honey he had harvested—an entire five-gallon bucket! As I lifted the lid, I noticed three tiny bees perched on the honey, struggling and nearly drowning. They were covered in sticky goo, barely able to move.

I asked if we could help them, but my dad shook his head. He was sure they wouldn't survive. "They're casualties," he said. I insisted once more—at least to spare them from suffering. After all, he himself had taught me that sometimes compassion means helping an animal—or even an insect—come to a dignified end. He finally agreed. He took the bees out and placed them in an empty yogurt container outside.

Because of the honey harvest, the yard was already bustling with activity, with bees flying everywhere. We left the small survivors on a bench and walked away.

A while later, my dad called me over to witness something incredible. The three sticky bees were now surrounded by their sisters. The others were tending to them—gently wiping the honey off their tiny bodies, refusing to abandon them. When we checked again later, only one bee remained, still being cared for. And finally, before I left, we checked one last time: the container was empty. All three had been rescued and were able to fly again.

They lived because they weren't alone. They lived because their family never gave up. They lived because their community believed in helping them until the very end.

Sister bees. Companion bees. United bees.

We could all learn from them.
