Looking more optimistically to 4yrs later, some of the main men from this squad should still be there, but a lot will be in their early-to-mid-30s (Kamada, Mitoma, Ueda, Tanaka etc). The next generation need to take the results and performances from the last few WC and learn
On the positive side for Japan, some showed that they should be playing at a higher level this tournament: Sano, Ueda, Nakamura, Zion are the top picks for me. Would be interesting to see if and where they move this summer
Respect to Don Carlo and Brasil for their performance, especially in that 2nd half. Whatever he (or his son) said at HT vs what Moriyasu said changed the game. Special shoutout to BrunoG, Vini & Rayan for their performances. When world class players show up it’ll always be tough
If we had Kubo, Mitoma, Minamino or even just 2/3 of them, the subs coming on would’ve been the likes of Junya Ito, Ritsu Doan, Keito Nakamura, Daizen Maeda etc which would’ve kept the quality level
Our lack of depth really showed in the second half. We couldn’t keep up the intensity and press from the first half, and when we did replace our tired players, the quality coming off the bench was too big a drop-off
I do sympathise with Moriyasu due to the number of injuries going into the WC, notable to our three literal poster-boys, Minamino, Mitoma and Kubo (got injured in first match vs NED)
We always manage to lose in the most painful ways, but I think that’s a reflection on not only the difference in quality (and penalty taking) between us and some of our opponents in the R16/R32, but also shows a slight lack of confidence at the end of games
Last 4 WC
2014: lose to Paraguay on pens
2018: lose to Belgium 3-2 from a 94th minute Chadli goal from being 2-0 up
2022: lose to Croatia on pens
2026: Brazil 95th minute winner
The lesson from this World Cup so far is nice and simple. Don’t play scared. If you have the advantage, keep going. The football gods appreciate courage.
