Side note-- I am watching the news right now (like an old lady) and they are talking about Asians being mistreated. Thought it was a cool connection to how relevant the issues are in the book. #johnson101
@cg_ROWVA I agree, it does depend on who it is. One person may never back down and will put their life on the line for their cause. While another might back down and fight from the "inside". #johnson101
A5: I feel like it is justifiable to trade freedom for "safety" only as a temporary fix. For example, Layla on the train. She traded her freedom so that the guards would not kill/harm her. But, later she will continue to fight for freedom. #johnson101
@StriderGimli @mrsjohnsonrowva I agree, but we should do this without calling attention to it. That attention feeds into the problem, and makes it seem like someone is doing it just to be a "good person" #johnson101
@cg_ROWVA I agree! We need to see people as people and forget about race, religion, and any other stereotypical feature. Accepting someone because they are a person is the best route for change, in my opinion. #johnson101
@WillESpence1 I agree. Prevention is the best route for change. That can only be done by teaching children to accept others. But in my opinion they should do that without making a point to do it because the other is different, but bc it is the right thing to do. #johnson101
A4: We can attempt to combat this by being an accepting person that advocates for change. As a single person, not much actual change can take place, but something is better than nothing. #johnson101
@EmilyKStewart1 It is honestly gross when you actually think about it. Because yes there are bad people. But, being bad is not defined by your race, religion, or skin color. It's defined by your moral actions. Some people just don't understand that. #johnson101
A3: I do see parallels with the story and this article. In both, people are being mistreated because of something they can't control. People unfortunately believe that Asian people are dangerous, just like people thinking all Muslims are terrorists. #johnson101
@kale21464444 I definitely agree! In both situations, the feature causing the people to be mistreated is something they cant control-- like skin color, religion, and race. #johnson101
@mrsjohnsonrowva That is an interesting point. Maybe it is because she has such a close bond with her dad through poetry and literature. He used to read her poems and play games with stories. #johnson101
@kale21464444 I though it was like a way of foreshadowing, too! Even if you have no prior knowledge of the story, you can tell the book is going to be about conflict and resistance to it. #johnson101
A2: The opening poem's purpose is to foreshadow what is going to happen in the story. It is about being knocked down, but being even better the next time. The final line "I resist" is quite powerful in the story. #johnson101
@MadiWalker17@ckalb21 It is quite refreshing to see such a bold, strong female main character. Some of Layla's personality seems to show on every page. #johnson101
@MadiWalker17 For sure! As I was reading I noticed little hints dropped here and there about her political views. Nothing wrong with it, but it was interesting to say the least. #johnson101
@cg_ROWVA I definitely agree with you. While reading I could not believe that situations like that have happened before in US history. It is insane how badly people treat each other sometimes. #johnson101
My first impression of the book was that it is super easy to get "sucked" in. There seems to always be a new event or problem that Layla Amin has to figure out. #johnson101
