The Cost of Colonialism

"There's a good quote there by the Earl of Glasgow in 1946, almost a century ago now, implicitly, that Scotland is to have no contact with the outside world except through London.

"And this was throughout English ... Westminster policy papers on any different policy area. Transport, economics, industry. Scotland was to have no contact with the outside world. And this goes to even today, where Westminster tells the Scottish ministers they can't deal with anything international, which is where we are.

"So limited economic infrastructure and inadequate public services and we have a zero growth position and a very poor GDP position. Historically high levels of unemployment, poverty, deprivation, inequality, high energy costs, a narrow industrial concentration.

"So basically what we are is set up to serve the mother country. And that's a colonial structural weakness for our economy particularly. So we end up with a very uncompetitive economy.

If we look quickly at GDP, we can see there Scotland's GDP measure $40,000 per capita, compared to Norway, Ireland over $100,000. So we are less than half. Something seriously wrong here because Scotland has enormous resources, a small population, a big land mass, a fairly big landmass and 60 odd percent of the exclusive economic zone. So, so Scots have a colonial GDP in that sense it's artificially low.

"The thing about colonialism is its aim, its purpose is to widen inequality. This is where I can't get my, quite get my head around the Scottish government in Holyrood and Victoria Quays saying their priority is to reduce inequality or to erase ... eradicate poverty. They can never do this under a colonial regime because the coloniser will always intercept the value, the wealth, the trade that we have.

"So my estimate here is that Scotland's GDP should normally be between $60,000 - $70,000 per capita or more. If it was that minimum, if it was that level, which is just about Danish level, we're looking for £100 billion, we're looking probably for £150 billion.

"And this is the cost of colonialism. One way or another, this is extracted from Scotland, through a hoax treaty and that is the cost of colonialism. So it's a monstrous amount of money. I mean, $150 billion is three times the block grant.

"So Hollywood are scrapping around for 40 billion, adding to little bits of taxation they can do to fix our potholes, and fix our hospitals, and do things with the schools, and whatnot. But they could have more than double that under independence easily, with probably a lot of spare change. So it's an enormous amount of money, but it's a colonial balance sheet we have.

"If we look at energy, we see that our energy price is the highest in the world. Yet we have enormous energy surpluses. Enormous energy surpluses. And we should have cables directly across the sea. We should be selling that energy not just to our neighbour England, but who dominates it and takes it for nothing, with no royalties coming back. We should be selling it to the continent for sure.

"And we would be a very wealthy trading economy with that. So we have a massive opportunity here: zero economic growth, a very poor GDP, under- development.

"And this means that the colonial economy and society is unable to develop. This is why our economy looks more like, and some parts of our cities, look more like Murmansk Oblast and mid-Norway." Prof Alf Baird

On 9 October 1745, Prince Charles on behalf of his father James VIII of Scotland, issued a Declaration that the "Pretended Union" was dissolved because it had been enacted against the sovereign will of the people of Scotland.

28 of 33 "histories" of the 45 I have consulted so far do not mention this event at all. Scots have been lied to about their history for hundreds of years. Most still do not know that abolition of the Union was a key aim of the Jacobite army.

Most still believe they know that the Jacobite army was majority Catholic (it was not) and supported the Divine Right of Kings (it did not).

Scotland has just done something quietly brilliant for its birds 🐦

New buildings across the country will now have to include "swift bricks", hollow bricks built straight into the walls that give birds a safe place to nest.

It sounds like a small thing but it isn't. Swift numbers in the UK have fallen by around 60% since the mid-1990s, and one of the biggest reasons is heartbreakingly simple: modern buildings have nowhere for them to go. Swifts have always nested in the nooks and gaps of our houses, and as those disappeared, so did they.

The birds themselves make it worse by being loyal to a fault. Swifts return to the exact same nest site year after year, having flown thousands of miles from Africa to get there.

When they arrive to find it sealed up, some will keep flying at the spot again and again, sometimes injuring themselves in the process.

The bricks cost about £30 each. They need no maintenance, they don't affect insulation, and once they're in the wall, you'd never know they were there. Sparrows, starlings and house martins use them too, all species in trouble for the same reason.

One RSPB conservationist put it starkly. In his part of Glasgow, not a single swift bred in 2025, the first time in his 30 years there. He called it "nothing short of heartbreaking."

Scotland is the first country in the UK to write this into law. Campaigners are now hoping the rest follows.

If the leaders of the main independence party do not, in fact, genuinely want or, (which is much the same), believe in the possibility of independence - and that is pretty damn clear now - then that party is, (to quote a former MI5 agent turned whistleblower of my acquaintance), neutralised.

It remains neutralised as long as its members refuse to see the obvious and stops being neutralised if and when they clean it out and take it back. Until then while you talk of unity, the party high heedyins are briefing against the one and only international campaign to get them a clear road to safe and uncontested UDI ie no need for Westminster permission - Liberation Scotland’s campaign to get international recognition of the right to self determination. Ask yourself why, will you?

And one more thing. We are going to do this. It may not be all that far off now. Why is ‘Scotland’s party’ so totally uninterested, not just in our progress but even in the rights that already exist for Scotland in international law and that Westminster is denying, language rights, media rights, environmental and territorial rights. Why? They should be fighting for those rights, fighting for us. They are not. In fact they are joining in the disposal of our territorial assets. So who really owns this party?

I now believe the SNP leadership is so captured that it will lie to Scotland and pretend it still needs Westminster permission even when we get the recognition we need to regain our independence without it. And with negotiations revolving around reparations not Scotland’s share of Englands debt!
Why don’t you find out? Ask honest John what he plans to do if the UN General Assembly recognises Scotland’s right to external self determination. Ask him to tell you not whether he believes it will happen but what he will do if it does.

Tonight I'll watch France vs Norway at the World Cup. In France, the match will be called by French commentators on a French channel. In Norway, by Norwegian commentators on a Norwegian channel. That's what every normal nation expects.

Now imagine that every single Scotland World Cup match was broadcast with only English and foreign commentators on English channels. Not one Scottish commentator or Scottish voice. Every game.

Scotland literally invented television but is not allowed to have its own TV channel. Do you know why? Because the English colonial state knows that without its colonial propaganda, its colonisation and lies about Scotland collapse.

A nation forced to experience its own national team through another nation's voice.

If this happened anywhere else in the world, it would be recognised immediately for what it is: colonialism. Scotland was simply expected to accept it. This must end now.
